The Purdue Boilermakers are the intercollegiate athletic teams of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The athletic identity is built around the “Motion P,” a slanted block letter P that serves as the primary athletic mark, along with the Boilermaker Special locomotive and the Purdue Pete mascot.
Design and History
Purdue’s athletic colors, old gold and black, date to 1887, when the captain of Purdue’s first football team chose the combination, reportedly adapting Princeton’s orange and black into old gold and black.[1]
In April 1996, Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics introduced a new series of logos designed to boost licensed merchandise sales and modernize the visual identity. Athletic director Morgan Burke said the new logos gave Purdue “a more progressive and modern visual identity.” The primary logo in that series resembled the university’s locomotive mascot, the Boilermaker Special. The work was done with assistance from the Collegiate Licensing Co., which retained Sean Michael Edwards Design of New York.[2][3]
In April 2012, Purdue released a redesigned logo featuring the Boilermaker Special, developed in partnership with Nike over several months. Purdue Associate AD for Communications Tom Schott said the change was part of a rebranding effort with Nike “to unify all of the different sports teams,” noting that previously softball, baseball, basketball and football each used different logos or fonts. The new logo was designed with apparel in mind, as Nike said the old train logo’s smoke detail did not reproduce well on shirts and hats.[4][5]
In January 2020, Purdue University launched a university-wide rebrand that unified academics and athletics under one visual system. The new academic logo combined the widely recognized Motion P with the Purdue University wordmark. The Motion P, a slanted block P introduced in the early 1990s on Purdue’s football helmets, had been largely reserved for athletic use until that point.[6][7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Boilermaker nickname originated in 1891, when a Crawfordsville, Indiana, reporter covering Purdue’s 44-0 win over Wabash College referred to the team as “boiler makers.” The name stuck and became the enduring identity for Purdue’s athletic teams.[8]
The Boilermaker Special, a Victorian-era locomotive that has served as Purdue’s official mascot since the 1930s, directly reflects the university’s engineering heritage and the industrial origin of the Boilermaker nickname.[2]
In the 2020 rebrand, the university’s athletics gold was renamed “Boilermaker Gold” and became Purdue’s primary gold color across both athletics and academics, creating a cohesive look.[6]
Typography and Design
Purdue maintains a distinct athletic font for its registered logos and wordmarks. University trademark guidelines state that Purdue registered logos and wordmarks appearing in the official athletic font should not be modified, stretched or distorted.[9]
In August 2023, Purdue Athletics unveiled an updated Purdue Pete logo featuring an active “Boiler Up” pose and smile, along with the traditional P in Purdue’s block-style font. Four color combinations were created, including the classic old gold and black. The refresh was designated a secondary look and did not replace the main athletic logos.[10]
