Qingdao is home to two Chinese Super League clubs with distinct visual identities: Qingdao Hainiu Football Club and Qingdao West Coast Football Club. Both clubs have undergone recent crest changes tied to club renamings, and each mark carries documented city and club symbolism.
Design and History
Qingdao Hainiu
Qingdao Hainiu Football Club unveiled a new crest on February 15, 2022, after a fan vote that drew 5,418 valid ballots. The club selected the second of three candidate designs, which was submitted for approval and adopted starting with the 2022 season.[1]
The 2022 crest uses a shield as its overall shape. It retains and refines the club’s charging sea-bull totem, adds a simplified football element suggesting a rising sun, and introduces sailboat and wave imagery tied to Qingdao’s coastal culture. The letters QDHNFC, standing for “Qingdao Hainiu Football Club,” appear on the mark, and the number 1993 at the bottom records the club’s founding year.[2][3]
This 2022 design followed an earlier crest introduced on May 10, 2021, at the club’s 28th anniversary celebration. That mark revived the “sea bull heading a ball” image from the 1995-era jersey crest, while carrying over the blue-and-orange color scheme and the football-with-ten-stars motif from the Qingdao Jonoon (Zhongneng) period.[4]
Qingdao West Coast
Qingdao West Coast Football Club, formerly Qingdao Youth Island, officially changed its name on March 21, 2023, and released a new logo at the renaming ceremony. The crest kept the club’s previous basic style, retaining the Chinese dragon as its central element, with blue sea imagery reflecting Qingdao’s coastal character. The wordmark “WEST COAST” identifies the club and its home in the West Coast New Area, while “TRUE WARRIOR” expresses the players’ fighting spirit.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
For Qingdao Hainiu’s 2022 crest, the club provided official explanations for each element. The sailboat and waves symbolize the cultural identity of Qingdao, the city where the club was founded. The football element emerging at the lower left carries the imagery of a rising sun, signifying the club’s unlimited potential and hope. The number 1993 records the club’s founding year.[2]
The crest also contains a hidden detail: the angle of the bull’s head and horns is 31 degrees, a reference to December 31, the club’s birthday.[1]
For Qingdao West Coast, the dragon motif symbolizes the club’s Chinese heritage, and the blue sea reflects Qingdao’s identity as a coastal city.[5]
Typography and Design
Qingdao Hainiu’s 2022 crest incorporates the uppercase letter mark QDHNFC, formed from the initials of “Qingdao Hainiu Football Club.”[2] The club stated that the new crest was designed to respond to fans’ requests to keep blue and orange as the primary colors, while updating the shield shape and core elements for a digital-era aesthetic.[6]
