South Georgia Tormenta FC is an American soccer organization based in Statesboro, Georgia, founded in 2015. The club’s visual identity was unveiled on October 28, 2015, at a public event on the campus of Georgia Southern University. The name “Tormenta” is Spanish for “storm,” a reference to the intense force of nature the club’s players seek to embody. The name was selected after more than 2,500 fans suggested nearly 200 different names in a month-long name-the-team contest. The identity was designed by Brandiose, a San Diego-based branding company led by partners Jason Klein and Casey White. [1]
Design and History
The centerpiece of the Tormenta FC logo is the glossy ibis, a bird native to the region. According to the club, the ibis is the last to take cover in a storm and the first to return after a storm has passed, a trait the organization uses to symbolize bravery and resilience. The club describes the ibis as “leading a storm and looming over all things soccer in South Georgia.” [1] The crest also features cloudy skies and waves underneath the ibis, representing the storm and the region’s coastal waters. [2]
The name and logo development took approximately three to four months, including strategizing of the name, with many different sketches created during the process. [3] The identity was created when the club was preparing to field its first team in the Premier Development League (now USL League Two), and the same primary crest has carried through the organization’s move to professional status in USL League One in 2019. [1]
In January 2019, the club announced a rebrand of its USL League Two team as Tormenta FC 2. Like the primary crest, the Tormenta FC 2 logo was designed by Brandiose and features the same ibis looming over stormy waters. The secondary crest is distinguished by the words “Tormenta” and “2” written across the top and bottom of the badge. [4]
In 2023, the club added a gold star to the top of its crest on its home jersey, representing the club’s 2022 USL League One championship. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s official colors are midnight navy, sky blue, silver, and magenta. According to the club, these colors pay tribute to “the storm in the sky, storm in the ocean, and passion for soccer in the community.” [1] Navy has served as the primary color for the club, while magenta has been featured on every home jersey from 2016 through 2022. [6]
The club’s official identity page describes the ibis as “known for its bravery in the animal kingdom.” When a storm approaches, the ibis is the last to seek shelter and the first to reappear when the storm subsides. The club also notes that Native American folklore portrays the ibis as a leader among birds, along with being a symbol of both danger and optimism. [6]
The crest features an ibis sitting atop waves, which represent the coasts and freshwater streams in the region. The magenta and navy color scheme makes the white ibis stand out. [7]
Typography and Design
The Tormenta FC 2 crest uses the words “Tormenta” and “2” written boldly across the top and bottom of the badge, distinguishing it from the primary club crest. [4] The primary crest itself does not carry a prominent wordmark, relying instead on the ibis illustration and shield format for recognition. The club’s 2022 home jersey, called the “Bolt Kit,” was inspired by the stormy badge and featured lightning strike patterns across the jersey in the club’s traditional navy, magenta, and sky blue colorway.
