The Syracuse Crunch are a professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL) based in Syracuse, New York. The franchise began play in Syracuse in 1994, and the team’s visual identity has centered on a superhero mascot named Crunchman, a figure that has defined the club’s brand across multiple NHL affiliation changes.
Design and History
The Crunch’s current primary logo, unveiled in July 2012, is a modern version of the franchise’s original superhero Crunchman. The redesign coincided with the club’s new partnership with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. The logo features Crunchman, a superhero figure making a punching motion with one hand and holding a hockey stick in the other, with the team name “CRUNCH” in ice block letters below the figure. The logo uses a blue and gray color scheme. [1]
Crunchman first debuted with the team in 1994 and served as the primary logo for five seasons. The “CRUNCH” ice block lettering has been a trademark feature in each of the club’s three previous primary logo designs. [1]
When the Crunch changed NHL affiliates from Vancouver to Columbus in 2000, Crunchman was replaced by a mascot named Al the Ice Gorilla, a white gorilla pounding its fists while chomping a hockey stick. [2] When the team partnered with the Anaheim Ducks in 2010, the Ice Gorilla logo changed in color to reflect the new partnership, while the rest of the logo remained largely the same. [1]
Team owner Howard Dolgon came up with the concept for the 2012 Crunchman redesign and worked with a local person to refine the artwork. Dolgon said the idea was his and that support for bringing back Crunchman was unanimous. [3]
The team has also released commemorative anniversary logos. For the 25th season in 2018-19, the Crunch unveiled a logo featuring the number 25 enclosed in a circle with “Syracuse Crunch” written around the top, with the primary Crunch logo in front of a ribbon bearing the years 1994 and 2019. [4] For the 30th season in 2023-24, the team unveiled a logo featuring the number 30 above a ribbon containing the words “Est. 1994,” with the primary Crunch logo on top and “Syracuse Crunch” written out below. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Crunch name was selected through a fan vote after the franchise relocated to Syracuse, and owner Howard Dolgon came up with the idea for a superhero to represent the team, leading to the creation of Crunchman. [2] The 2012 return of Crunchman was tied directly to the team’s new affiliation with the Tampa Bay Lightning, with the new blue and gray color scheme reflecting the partnership. [1]
