The UC San Diego Tritons are the intercollegiate athletics teams of the University of California San Diego, a public research university in La Jolla, California. The athletics program’s visual identity is built around the Triton, a figure from Greek mythology, and the university’s official navy and gold colors.
Design and History
The current primary logo for UC San Diego Athletics is a block logotype reading “UC San Diego,” custom designed and based on the City BQ font, with a trident mark placed to the left of the text. In the standard version, the trident appears in blue, the “UC” letters in gold with blue trim, and “San Diego” in all-blue. A dark-background version places the trident and text in white and gold on a blue field. The UC San Diego Tritons logo is a registered trademark of the university. [1] [2]
This primary mark dates to 2018, when the athletics department updated its visual identity. The previous primary logo, used from 2002 to 2018, featured a full Triton mascot figure modeled after Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, shown about to throw a trident, with the wordmark “TRITONS” in stylized lettering. That mascot figure was retained as a secondary logo in the 2018 refresh before being discontinued in 2021. The 2018 update also adjusted the blue and gold color palette used across the marks. [3] [4]
The 2018 identity update came during the university’s transition to NCAA Division I athletics. UC San Diego announced in November 2017 that it would begin the four-year transition process and join the Big West Conference effective July 1, 2020. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Triton nickname and mascot derive from Greek mythology. Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with the upper body of a man and the lower body of a fish, who carried a three-pronged golden trident. [6]
The choice of the Triton as the university’s mascot was a student-led decision, determined by a vote of the inaugural undergraduate class in 1964. According to former UC San Diego Athletic Director Earl W. Edwards, “The Triton was picked because of its association with the ocean, which was the foundation for UCSD.” The proximity to the ocean and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography led UC San Diego to select the Triton as its mascot. [7] [8]
The university’s official colors are UC San Diego Navy (Pantone 2767, hex #182B49) and UC San Diego Gold (Pantone 1245, hex #C69214), along with UC San Diego Blue and Yellow as additional core colors. [9]
Typography and Design
The primary athletics logotype is custom designed and based on the City BQ font, paired with the trident mark. [1] The UC San Diego Athletics marks are intended primarily to represent the athletics program and are not to be used in place of the official UC San Diego campus logo as an identifier of the university.
