TransACT was the trading name of TransACT Capital Communications, an Australian telecommunications company based in Canberra that provided broadband internet access, fixed telephony, cable television and mobile phone services.[1] The company was established around 2001 by Actew, an ACT Government-owned corporation.[2]
Design and History
TransACT’s visual identity was a typographic wordmark. The brand name was presented in a sans-serif typeface with evenly weighted letterforms, with the “ACT” portion of the name emphasized through capitalization. The wordmark was rendered in a blue color scheme.
The brand operated under the TransACT name in Canberra, as well as in Geelong, Ballarat and Mildura after the company acquired regional Victorian telecommunications provider Neighbourhood Cable and rebranded it as TransACT in June 2011.[3]
In November 2011, TransACT was acquired by Perth-based internet service provider iiNet for $60 million. At the time of the sale, iiNet’s chief executive officer Michael Malone said the TransACT name would be retained in the ACT, Geelong, Ballarat and Mildura, noting that “TransACT has such a strong position in Canberra. It is a well-known, well-liked brand.”[2]
In March 2022, iiNet began winding down the TransACT brand, moving all customers to the iiNet brand and discontinuing the TransACT name.[4] The archived TransACT website confirmed that from 15 March 2022, services previously provided by TransACT would be provided by iiNet.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The wordmark placed the brand name at the center of the identity, with the capitalized “ACT” serving as a direct reference to the Australian Capital Territory, the region where the company was based and built its fibre network. The typographic approach let the lettering itself carry the identity without additional pictorial elements.
