Morishige Dolls, known in Japan as 人形のモリシゲ (Ningyo no Morishige), is a doll specialty retailer based in the Matsuyamachi district of Osaka. The company traces its origins to 1919, when founder Morishige Haruo established a cosmetics wholesaler called Morishige Shoten. It shifted to doll manufacturing and direct sales in 1965, and in 1968 the company formally changed its name to Kabushiki Kaisha Morishige. The name derives from the founder’s surname and also plays on the auspicious reading of “盛繁” (Morishige), a variant of the word for prosperity. [1]

Design and History

In 1968, alongside the corporate name change, Morishige adopted a corporate color scheme of red lettering on a yellow background for its banners, signs and other branding materials. This was a deliberate effort to build a distinctive image within the traditional sekku doll trade. [1]

The company’s current brand identity centers on the “Kanki” (歓喜) brand, which was launched in 1989 (Heisei year 1). According to the company’s official website, the Kanki symbol mark was created at the same time as the brand itself. The mark was designed to evoke the image of a Kyoto doll (御所人形), a type of traditional Japanese doll associated with the imperial court. The design depicts the doll’s head with a water-drawn pattern (mizuhiki) on its forehead, intended to express the energy of new life and joy. [2]

Meaning and Symbolism

The Kanki mark draws on the visual language of Kyoto dolls, which the company describes as representing the spiritual culture of Japan as passed down through generations. The mizuhiki pattern on the doll’s forehead is a traditional celebratory motif, and the overall design is meant to convey the joy and vitality associated with the birth of a child, themes central to the hina dolls and May dolls that Morishige sells. [2]

While the company’s earlier corporate identity used red-on-yellow lettering for signage, the current Kanki symbol mark functions as the brand emblem for Morishige’s doll products, appearing on its website and product lines. The company also operates a sister company, Kanki Corporation, established in 1986, which handles children’s goods and doll-related products. [1]
