Societe Prenatal

Prénatal is an Italian retail chain for maternity and children's clothing and accessories, founded in France in 1947 and opened in Milan in 1963. Swiss graphic designer Rudi Meyer created a mark for the company in 1966, with some sources dating it to 1974.

Prénatal is an Italian retail chain specializing in clothing and accessories for maternity and children, established in France in 1947 and arriving in Italy with its first Milan store in 1963.[1] The brand’s visual identity has a documented history tied to Swiss graphic designer Rudi Meyer, who created a mark for the company in 1966.[2]

Design and History

Swiss-born designer Rudi Meyer (born 1943 in Basel) studied at the School of Design in Basel under Donald Brown, Armin Hofmann and Emil Ruder before moving to Paris in 1964.[2] His client work included logos and corporate identity programs for Waterman and the Banque Nationale de Paris, as well as a 1966 mark for Prénatal, described at the time as a chain of clothing and accessories for maternity and children.[2][3]

Some sources date Meyer’s Prénatal logo to 1974 rather than 1966, and the exact year of the original mark remains uncertain across available references.[4] What is consistent is that Meyer designed a logo for Prénatal during his early Paris period, when he was active as an independent graphic designer.[3]

In 2022, Prénatal renewed its corporate brand image with the goal of appealing to a younger audience.[5] A separate rebranding effort for the Dutch market, developed by The Retail Practice and retained by investors Matures, was scheduled to roll out from summer 2025, introducing a refreshed logo and colour palette.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

A trademark registration for the Prénatal wordmark describes the logo as the wording “PRENATAL” in fancy block capital and small letters, featuring a point placed onto the letter “E” and a stylized heart placed into the letter “P”.[7] A related registration specifies the color treatment: the part “NATAL” in fuchsia (Pantone 213C), the part “PRE” in green (Pantone 7490C), with a point of the same green placed onto the letter “e” and a stylized heart in fuchsia placed into the letter “P”.[8]

These trademark records document the wordmark’s distinctive typographic details and two-color scheme, though they do not attribute the design to a specific designer or explain intended symbolism beyond the heart motif within the “P”.

Typography and Design

The trademark description characterizes the lettering as “fancy block capital and small letters,” indicating a mixed-case wordmark with ornamental treatment.[7] The documented color specifications for the current mark are green (Pantone 7490C) for the “PRE” portion and fuchsia (Pantone 213C) for the “NATAL” portion, with the heart and the point above the “e” matching their respective word sections.[8]
