FlixBus is the long-distance bus brand of Flix, a Munich-based travel-tech company launched in 2013. The current FlixBus wordmark and visual identity date from a 2016 rebrand that unified the company’s European operations under a single name and design system.
Design and History
FlixBus was founded in Munich in 2013 by three entrepreneurs. In January 2015, the company merged with Berlin-based competitor MeinFernbus, and the combined entity initially operated in German-speaking markets under the double brand “MeinFernbus FlixBus.” Outside the DACH region, the name “FlixBus” had already been used exclusively since mid-2015 as part of the company’s internationalization.[1]
On 3 May 2016, FlixBus introduced a revised, Europe-wide uniform brand design and adopted “FlixBus” as its trademark name across all markets.[1] The rebrand included a new wordmark that took cues from the earlier FlixBus lettering but introduced a uniform font size and an X emphasized like a “>” symbol.[2] The company’s official description states that the new logo and the X stand for “the infinite number of travel opportunities” offered daily.[3]
The rebrand was commissioned in 2015 to designer Desha Nujsongsinn, working under the studio deshalb. The project involved merging two established brands with different visual identities into a unified, scalable system, including logo development, illustration systems, iconography, vehicle graphics, and custom typography. The vehicle design was also reworked, moving from the previous green-and-orange appearance toward a cleaner approach based on green surfaces and a simplified white logo system.[4] The rebrand launched successfully in 2016.[4]
The green color on the long-distance buses remained unchanged from MeinFernbus, while the earlier blue of FlixBus was retired.[2][1]
In April 2022, the parent company FlixMobility changed its legal form to a European Company (SE) and was renamed Flix, introducing a new global umbrella brand under which FlixBus and FlixTrain operate.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to FlixBus’s own explanation, the X in the logo represents the infinite number of travel opportunities the company offers.[3] The green color, which the company has described as part of its “DNA,”[5] has been a consistent element of the brand since the MeinFernbus era and remains the dominant corporate color on the buses.[1]
Typography and Design
The 2016 wordmark uses a uniform font size across all letters, with the X visually emphasized as a “>” symbol.[2] The rebrand project included the development of custom typography as part of the comprehensive brand system.[4]
