The Gesellschaft für Holzstoffbereitung (French: Société pour la fabrication de pâte à bois) was a Swiss wood pulp and paper manufacturer founded in 1863 in Grellingen, Basel-Landschaft, with its seat in Basel. The company was renamed Gesellschaft für Holzstoffbereitung in 1871 and later operated under the names Holzstoff and Holzstoff-Holvis.[1]

Design and History

The company’s centenary publication, 100 Jahre Gesellschaft für Holzstoffbereitung (La Société pour la Fabrication de Pâte de Bois a cent ans), was published in Basel in 1964 by Bosshardt, covering the company’s history from 1863 to 1963.[2] The publisher, Bosshardt, was a Basel-based printing and publishing operation active in the mid-20th century.[3]

Walter Bosshardt, a Basel graphic designer active from at least the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, is credited with poster designs for cultural institutions in Basel, including the Basler Kammerorchester and Theater Basel.[3][4] A logo database attributes the Gesellschaft für Holzstoffbereitung symbol to Walter Bosshardt, designed in 1960.[5] However, no primary or archival source has been located that independently confirms this attribution or the exact design date.

The company’s early industrial activity is well documented. It held patents for wood pulp processing, including a bleaching process patented in 1879 and a rotating sorting machine patented in 1883.[6][7] By the early 20th century, the company operated subsidiaries in Albbruck (Baden, Germany), Mandeure (France), and Carmignano di Brenta and Friola (Italy).[8]

Meaning and Symbolism

The logo database entry describes the symbol as an outline logo with a square shape, but it does not provide a detailed visual description or documented meaning.[5]
