Atelier Yran was a Norwegian graphic design studio and advertising agency founded by illustrator and designer Knut Yran (1920–1998). Yran ran the studio in Oslo from 1953 to 1966, a period during which it became, in many ways, the first Norwegian agency dedicated to graphic design.[1]

Design and History

Knut Yran had worked at the Aschehoug publishing house from 1950 until 1953, when he established his own advertising agency in Oslo.[1] The studio operated under the name Atelier Yran from 1953 to 1966.[1] In 1966, Yran left to become head of the design department at the Philips electronics corporation in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, a position he held until 1980.[1]

The Atelier Yran symbol was designed by Knut Yran himself in 1958.[2] The mark is a rhombus-based outline logo.[2] Beyond this basic description, no further documented details about the mark’s construction, colors, or intended symbolism have been verified in available sources.

Meaning and Symbolism

No official documentation has been found that explains the intended meaning or symbolism behind the Atelier Yran rhombus mark. While the studio’s reputation as an early Norwegian graphic design agency is well documented,[1] the specific design intent behind the 1958 logo remains undocumented in accessible sources.

Knut Yran is better known for his poster work, including the official poster for the 1952 Oslo Winter Olympics and his celebrated travel posters for the Norway Travel Association.[3] His 1958 poster “Samegutten” (The Sami Boy), created during his Atelier Yran years, won first prize in the international IUOTO poster contest in 1959.[4]
