The Type Collective is a Romanian type and lettering project founded in the summer of 2012, when eight designers met in Bucharest to experiment with typography and share their work online. The group was started by graphic designers Andrei Ogradă and Vian Peanu, who wanted to promote lettering and typography, fields they felt were underexplored in Romania. The other founding members were Alex Beltechi, Felix Hornoiu, Vlad Neuman, Koma, Nicu Duta (Kitra) and Octavian Budai. The project’s website, thetypecollective.com, features original sketches, explorations and finished work created by the members. [1] [2]
Design and History
The Type Collective logo was designed by Andrei Ogradă in 2012, the same year the project was launched. [3] Ogradă, a self-taught graphic designer who later founded the digital type foundry Ograda Type Company SRL in 2017, was one of the two initiators of the collective. [4] [2]
The mark is described as a monogram with a weave shape, reflecting the collective’s focus on letterforms. [3] The logo accompanied the project’s first exhibition, The Type Collective 01, held in Bucharest in February 2013, which featured over 50 works by the eight artists and was the first event in Romania dedicated exclusively to lettering and typography design. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The collective’s stated purpose was to promote lettering and typography, two disciplines the founders felt were highly appreciated abroad but little exploited in Romania. The project was conceived as a playground for the eight designers to experiment with type, learn from each other and raise the quality of lettering work produced locally. [5] The logo’s monogram and weave construction aligns with this letter-centric mission, though no official documentation of additional symbolic meaning has been published.
