Discotel Ltée was a Canadian record company based in Montreal, active in the late 1970s. The company was incorporated in 1976 under the name 80768 Canada Ltée and adopted the name Discotel Ltée on February 23, 1977. It was amalgamated into Télémedia Communications Ltée on September 1, 1979. [1]

Design and History

The Discotel Ltée symbol was designed by Canadian graphic designer William Roberto Wilson in 1977. [2] Wilson, born June 4, 1953, in Chicoutimi, Québec, was an art director, graphic designer and photographer. He earned a Bachelor in Graphic Design from Université Laval in 1977 and worked as a graphic designer at Claude Plante & Associates Inc. in Quebec City beginning in 1976. [3] Wilson also designed the 1976 logo for Le Bruit Bleu Inc., a sound systems company, which was featured in Rich Baird’s LogoArchive collection. [4]

The mark is a circular design incorporating a disc motif, consistent with the company’s record industry focus. The logo is categorized among circle, dot, cut, ring and disc logos. [2]

Discotel Ltée released records through the late 1970s, including the 1977 Pierre Lalonde single “Tu N’As Jamais Ete Aussi Loin De Moi” [5] and the 1977 album Danger by the band Danger. [6] The company also produced disco releases such as the Bombers’ “(Everybody) Get Dancin'” and “Let’s Dance,” which were licensed to other labels. [7] [8]

Meaning and Symbolism

The logo’s circular disc form directly references the vinyl record, the core product of the company’s business. The design combines the company’s initial “D” with a stylized record shape, using the negative space of the letterform to complete the disc imagery. The stark black-and-white palette relies on form rather than color for recognition, making the mark suitable for reproduction across print media including record center labels and letterheads.
