Essence Music is an independent record label based in Juiz de Fora, in the southeast of Brazil. The label was conceived in the late 1990s as a micro mailorder service and expanded its activities in 2003, focusing on ambient, drone, psychedelic, avant-rock and experimental music released in hand-crafted physical editions. [1]
Design and History
The Essence Music symbol was originally designed at Duane Dalton in 2014. [2] Duane Dalton is an Irish graphic designer based in London who specialises in logo design and brand identity systems, with a noted preference for minimalistic qualities that communicate a clear and precise message. [3] Dalton studied Visual Communication and Fine Arts at the Institute of Art Design & Technology (IADT) in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland, and has worked on corporate identity, photography, editorial design, logo design, posters and t-shirts. [4]
Dalton’s design approach involves working with empty space, geometric elements and flat colours, removing any superfluous element that does not contribute necessary information. [4] The Essence Music mark is categorised among circle and stripe logo designs. [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented interpretation of the Essence Music symbol is limited. [2] Dalton’s broader design philosophy, however, favours minimalism and allows the viewer to complete the meaning of a work through the use of negative space and geometric forms. [4]
