Kuraray Co., Ltd. is a Japanese specialty chemical company founded in 1926 as Kurashiki Silk Weaving. On its 80th anniversary in 2006, it replaced the K-Kuraray mark with a new group logo designed by Soeda Design Factory, led by Takayuki Soeda.

Kuraray Co., Ltd. is a Japanese specialty chemical company founded in 1926 as Kurashiki Silk Weaving, later renamed Kurashiki Rayon in 1949. The name “Kuraray” derives from a combination of “Kura” from Kurashiki and “re” from rayon. The company adopted the corporate trademark “K-Kuraray” in 1963, and in 2006, on its 80th anniversary, it replaced that mark with a new unified group logo. [1] [2]

Design and History

Kuraray’s previous corporate trademark, known as “K-Kuraray,” was first established in 1963. [1] The company used this mark for over four decades as it expanded from synthetic fibers into resins, chemicals, and highly functional fibers, growing into a global operation with major bases in Japan, the United States, Europe, and Asia. [1]

On June 24, 2006, marking the company’s 80th anniversary, Kuraray introduced a new corporate trademark and unified the logo across the entire Kuraray Group. The new mark was designed by Soeda Design Factory, led by Takayuki Soeda. [1] The redesign was undertaken to support the Group’s global expansion and integrated operations through coherent visual communication. [1]

The new logo uses the Romanized lowercase wordmark “kuraray,” replacing the previous “K-Kuraray” mark. [3] The change was part of a broader effort to create a globally recognizable identity for the group. [1]

Meaning and Symbolism

According to Kuraray’s official announcement, each element of the 2006 logo carries documented meaning. The lowercase lettering was chosen to represent the Group’s capability for growth. The trademark color, a light shade of blue, was selected to depict the Group’s nimbleness and mobility. [1]

The last three letters, “ray,” are italicized for emphasis. This element carries a dual meaning: it references “rayon,” the company’s founding business in chemical fibers and textiles, and “ray” as in rays of light, pointing to the new growth business of optical materials. Together, the italicized “ray” is meant to depict a history and future directed at business expansion. [1]

Typography and Design

The 2006 Kuraray Group trademark is set entirely in lowercase Romanized lettering, a deliberate choice to support global recognition and to express the Group’s growth potential. [1] The italic treatment of the final three letters creates a visual emphasis that distinguishes the wordmark while reinforcing the company’s founding and future business directions. [1]
