The Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), also known as AgBank, is one of China’s “Big Four” state-owned commercial banks, serving 320 million retail customers through nearly 24,000 branches. Its circular emblem, combining an ancient Chinese coin with a wheat ear, has been in continuous use since 1988 and remains one of the most recognizable bank marks in China.
Design and History
The Agricultural Bank of China officially adopted its current emblem on November 1, 1988. The mark was designed by Chen Hanmin, a professor at the Central Academy of Arts and Design (now the Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghua University) and one of China’s most prominent logo designers. Chen was commissioned in March 1988 after the bank solicited proposals from both internal staff and external design experts. He submitted two proposals in May 1988, and after an expert review in July, his design was selected with modifications. The emblem has been in use ever since.[1][2]
Chen’s design brief required the emblem to express three concepts: “Chinese” (with a “中” character element), “agricultural” (with wheat ears, as seen in the national emblem), and “banking” (with a coin motif). He described his design philosophy as “easy to understand, easy to remember, good-looking, and easy to use.”[1]
The bank’s visual identity has undergone several refinements since 1988. In 1996, the bank issued its first standardized visual identity manual, specifying the emblem in a dedicated green, the Chinese name in black, and the English name in green. In 2009, when the bank was restructured into a joint-stock company, the logo was updated with a brighter green, the Chinese logotype was changed from a Wei Stele calligraphic style to a Han Yi bold Song typeface, and the English name was changed from green to black.[1][3]
In December 2023, the bank announced a broader brand refresh. While the core emblem remained unchanged, the refresh introduced new auxiliary colors (“Sprout Green,” “Mountain Green,” and “Golden Ear Yellow”) alongside the standard “ABC Green,” plus a new “digitally flowing wheat ear” auxiliary graphic and an animated version of the logo for digital applications.[4][5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The emblem is composed of an ancient Chinese coin and a wheat ear. The outer circle represents the traditional round coin, symbolizing currency and banking. A square-shaped wheat ear runs vertically through the center, symbolizing agriculture and forming the essential elements of the bank’s name. At the heart of the wheat ear, a “田” (tian, meaning “field”) character is formed, reinforcing the bank’s agricultural focus. The sharp tips of the wheat ear point upward, creating an opening in the outer circle, which evokes a sense of breakthrough and symbolizes the bank’s continuous advancement in supporting agricultural development.[6][7]
The emblem’s standard color is green, described by the bank as the “original color of life,” symbolizing vitality, harvest, simplicity, and stability. It represents the bank’s image of integrity and efficiency, as well as the flourishing of its business.[6] The bank’s visual identity manual specifies the standard green as PANTONE 3288C.[8]
Typography and Design
The bank’s Chinese logotype has changed twice since the emblem’s introduction. From 1985, the bank used a calligraphic logotype written by the calligrapher Han Shaoyu. In 1996, the bank standardized its identity with a Wei Stele variant typeface for the Chinese name and Helvetica for the English name. In 2009, the Chinese logotype was changed to the Han Yi bold Song typeface, and the English name was changed from green to black.[1]
