KeyBank is the primary retail banking subsidiary of KeyCorp, a bank-based financial services company headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. The bank’s roots trace back to 1825, when it was founded as the Commercial Bank of Albany in Albany, New York. KeyCorp’s modern structure emerged from a 1994 merger between the Albany-based KeyCorp and Cleveland’s Society Corporation, with the merged company retaining the KeyCorp name and moving its headquarters to Cleveland. Because the KeyCorp brand was more recognizable, the merged companies opted to retain that name. [1] [2]
Design and History
The KeyBank logo consists of two parts: a wordmark in black and a stylized key in red. The two elements may be positioned side by side, with “KeyBank” to the left and the key to the right, or stacked one above the other. When stacked, the key is typically placed in the right corner, though versions with it in the left corner also exist. When a compact icon is needed, such as on the bank’s website, the key appears without the wordmark. [3]
The bank’s brand identity has remained fairly consistent over the decades. Versions with taglines such as “Use the red key” and “Anything is possible” have appeared. [3] In 1998, KeyCorp launched a national print advertising campaign that emphasized the key logo alone, downplaying the bank’s name. Marketing executives said the logo would be used by itself in certain contexts, with readers expected to identify the company from the symbol alone. [4]
In the mid-2010s, the brand underwent a broader identity effort. Design firm Siegel+Gale developed a brand identity for KeyBank expressing “simplicity, impact, and personal connection through banking.” The brand idea of “People First” was created to communicate a human approach and help unify the bank’s many business divisions under a common identity and story. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The key logo is meant to convey security and “unlocking financial” opportunity, according to KeyCorp’s marketing executives in 1998. [4] The key symbol’s “head” has been noted to resemble a keyhole or a flower, adding a distinctive visual element to the mark. [3]
Typography and Design
The KeyBank wordmark uses a clean sans-serif typeface with classic proportions. While the typography is fairly generic, the key symbol makes the design unique. The key is large and has a recognizable shape. [3]
The color palette combines black and white with a striking shade of red. The red is identified as hex #CC0000, RGB 204, 0, 0, a tone comparable to Boston University Red. [3] Brand asset data also lists the primary brand color as #CC0000. [6]
