Ally Bank is the direct-to-consumer online banking arm of Ally Financial Inc., the Detroit-based digital financial services company. The brand was introduced in May 2009 when GMAC Bank, the former banking unit of General Motors’ financing arm, was renamed Ally Bank as part of a broader effort to distance itself from its troubled parent during the financial crisis.[1]
Design and History
The Ally Bank identity was created as part of a fully integrated rebranding effort led by advertising agency BBH New York, which was tapped by GMAC Financial Services to handle everything from strategic development and positioning to naming and brand identity.[2] The agency’s campaign, built around the tagline “Straightforward,” emphasized transparency and consumer-friendly practices.[2]The original mark, introduced in May 2009, was described by The New York Times as “a stylized purple lower-case ‘a,’ sort of a smiling swoosh.”[1] The wordmark consisted of a purple lowercase “a” followed by the letters “lly” in black, according to the trademark registration filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.[3] A separate trademark registration for the full wordmark, filed in 2010, described the mark as “a stylized letter ‘a’ followed by the letters ‘lly’ all in purple.”[4]In May 2010, the parent company GMAC Inc. formally changed its corporate name to Ally Financial Inc., completing the transition that had begun with the bank unit a year earlier.[5] The Ally brand was first introduced at Ally Bank before being extended to the broader organization.[5]Meaning and Symbolism
The name “Ally” was chosen to reflect the bank’s core positioning as a customer advocate. According to Ally’s president of consumer and commercial banking, Diane Morais, the brand premise was: “The world doesn’t need another bank, it needs a better bank.”[6] The name was intended to signal a partner-like relationship with customers, in contrast to the traditional banking model.[6]The purple color was a deliberate departure from the conventional blues and greens of traditional banking. The trademark registration for the original logo explicitly claims purple as a feature of the mark.[3] A Canadian trademark registration for the ALLY Logo also notes that “the color purple is claimed as a feature of the mark.”[7]Typography and Design
The Ally wordmark uses a lowercase sans-serif treatment, a design choice that contemporary design commentary at the time of launch noted as unusual for a bank. Brand New, the design criticism site, described the logo as “a fairly sturdy, well-designed lowercase logo, with just the slightest hint of Web 2.0 peeking through.”[8] The distinctive single-story “a” with its notch-like counter was noted as a departure from the ubiquitous circle-with-a-square-corner approach common in financial logos.[8]In 2016, Ally launched its first-ever unified brand campaign under the “Do It Right” mantra, bringing together its online bank, auto finance, insurance, and brokerage offerings under one brand promise.[9] Brand consultancy Monigle worked with Ally on this brand evolution, which aimed to unify the brand as Ally Bank and Ally Auto had previously operated with autonomous brand control.[10] The updated brand was designed to accommodate new product lines including mortgages, credit cards, and other innovations.[10]Logo Index is an independent educational archive covering logos, visual identities and graphic design history.
