BanBajío is the commercial brand of Banco del Bajío, S.A., a Mexican multiple banking institution headquartered in León, Guanajuato. The bank’s official name, “BanBajío,” and its logos are registered trademarks in Mexico before the Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial (IMPI).[1]
Design and History
The BanBajío logo features a distinctive symbol built from the letter “B” rendered in a contrapuesta (opposed or mirrored) arrangement. This double-B mark has been in use by the bank for years, and in late 2021 it drew public attention when a social media comparison noted the visual similarity between BanBajío’s long-standing mark and a new Balenciaga logo that also used a contrapuesta “B.”[2]
The bank’s official annual report lists “BANCO DEL BAJIO y Diseño” as a registered trademark, confirming that the wordmark and its accompanying graphic design are protected as a combined mark.[1] The same report also registers “BB BANBAJO y Diseño” and “BB BANBAJO SOLUCIONES DE PAGO y Diseño,” indicating that the “BB” monogram is used as a distinct brand element across the bank’s products and services.[1]
In August 2020, BanBajío announced a renewed image for its debit and credit cards as part of a broader digital transformation. The bank described the change as “una imagen renovada de nuestras tarjetas” (a renewed image of our cards), integrating contactless payment technology across its plastic cards.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The contrapuesta “B” symbol is documented as a central element of the BanBajío identity, though the bank has not published an official explanation of its intended symbolism. The mirrored-B construction visually echoes the “BB” abbreviation used in the bank’s registered “BB BANBAJO” marks.[1] The mark’s longevity is notable: it was already in use for years before the 2021 Balenciaga comparison brought it wider attention.[2]
Typography and Design
The BanBajío logo combines the contrapuesta “B” symbol with the wordmark “BanBajío.” The bank’s official annual report registers “BANCO DEL BAJIO y Diseño” as a combined trademark, indicating that the wordmark and symbol are treated as a single protected design.[1] No official documentation of the logo’s specific typeface, exact color specifications, or design agency attribution has been published by the bank.
