ANZ, the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, is one of the region’s largest financial institutions. Its current visual identity, introduced in 2009, combines a simplified “ANZ” wordmark with a lotus symbol, a mark that has remained in place through subsequent brand refreshes.
Design and History
The modern ANZ identity dates to 2009, when the bank launched a new global brand to support its “super regional” strategy across Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific. The new look consisted of a modernised and simplified ANZ wordmark and a new symbol, introduced to give customers and staff a way to recognise and connect with ANZ, including in countries where non-English characters are used.[1] The brand was first officially launched in Indonesia in March 2009, chosen as a priority market for the bank’s Asia Pacific expansion.[2]
The 2009 logo replaced an earlier wordmark introduced in 1999, which featured four horizontal lines cutting through the letterforms. The new version reduced this to a single horizontal line and added the lotus symbol.[3] The identity was created by the identity consultants Re, part of ANZ’s advertising agency M&C Saatchi, and took 18 months to implement at a cost of approximately $15 million.[4]
The bank’s brand history extends further back. When ANZ Ltd merged with the English, Scottish and Australian Bank in 1970 to form the modern Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, a brand logo was launched that “remains to this day, subtly evolved over the decades.”[5]
In 2025, ANZ announced a further brand update. The changes include an updated brand colour, a new font and a simple, modern look and feel, but the logo itself is unchanged, featuring a new shade of blue.[6] ANZ New Zealand confirmed the same approach, noting the logo “will still be the familiar ‘ANZ’ with a Lotus” after a “small glow-up” in 2015.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
ANZ describes the lotus as a symbol of unity and growth, relevant to customers across the region regardless of differences in language and culture. The three petals signify Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific, while the central shape represents the bank’s customers and people, described as the driving force behind ANZ’s business.[2] The central human shape, visible in the negative space between the petals, represents ANZ’s customers and people.[1]
Typography and Design
The 2009 identity introduced a modernised and simplified ANZ wordmark alongside the lotus symbol.[1] The 2025 brand update introduced a new font and an updated brand colour described as “Pacific Blue,” while keeping the logo itself unchanged.[6][7]
