Atlantic Union Bank is the retail banking brand of Atlantic Union Bankshares Corporation, a Richmond, Virginia-based holding company. The bank adopted the Atlantic Union name and its current visual identity on May 19, 2019, when Union Bank & Trust completed the integration of Access National Bank and unified its brand across Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina.[1]
Design and History
The current Atlantic Union Bank logo consists of an abstract triangle design made of two angled lines, with the words “ATLANTIC UNION BANK” set to the right of the mark. “ATLANTIC” appears on one line with “UNION BANK” below it.[2] The same mark is used in the bank’s wealth management branding, where “WEALTH MANAGEMENT” appears to the right, separated by a vertical line.[2]
The rebrand followed a series of acquisitions that expanded the bank’s footprint beyond Virginia. After completing the integration of Access National Bank, the company stated it had “unified our brand under a distinctive name and logo” so customers could “easily identify with their bank from Virginia, to Maryland and North Carolina.”[1] The holding company simultaneously changed its name from Union Bankshares Corporation to Atlantic Union Bankshares Corporation and its NASDAQ ticker symbol from UBSH to AUB.[1]
The bank’s own history page confirms the reasoning: “After these acquisitions, we realized that it was time to bring consistency to our brand, and we changed our name to Atlantic Union Bank (AUB) on May 19, 2019.”[3] The name change was also motivated by trademark availability. Union Bank & Trust never had a nationally available trademark, while the Atlantic Union name did.[4]
An earlier identity change occurred in 2009, when Union Bankshares Corporation announced it would merge with First Market Bank and unveiled a new logo and combined bank name, Union First Market Bank.[5] That identity was later superseded by the 2019 Atlantic Union rebrand.
Meaning and Symbolism
The bank’s design language includes what its own brand partners describe as “electric green” accents. Baskervill, the architecture firm that designed Atlantic Union Bank’s prototype branch in 2018, noted the concept featured “crisp signage, dashes of Atlantic Union Bank’s electric green, robust technology, and lots of natural light.”[6] The same firm described the brand as “bold and timeless.”[6]
No official source documents a specific symbolic meaning for the abstract triangle mark or its two angled lines. The bank has not publicly disclosed the design agency responsible for creating the 2019 identity.
Typography and Design
Brand asset data lists the bank’s primary colors as Congress Blue (hex #004B87) and Green Haze (hex #00A754).[7] The wordmark is set in a clean sans-serif typeface, though the specific font has not been publicly documented.
The abstract triangle mark is used consistently across the bank’s divisions. In 2021, the wealth management division was rebranded from Middleburg Financial to Atlantic Union Bank Wealth Management, adopting the parent bank’s logo and name.[8] The Middleburg Financial brand, which retains its own iconic fox logo, continues to be used for trust and wealth management services delivered by Atlantic Union Bank and its affiliates.[1]
