Axis Bank, one of India’s largest private sector banks, adopted its current visual identity in 2007 when it rebranded from UTI Bank. The logo was introduced as part of a comprehensive corporate rebranding exercise that accompanied the bank’s name change on July 30, 2007.[1]
Design and History
The Axis Bank logo was created by the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather (O&M), which was hired to design and implement the rebranding campaign.[1] The bank decided to rebrand because it was allowed to use the “UTI” name for free only until January 31, 2008, after which it would have to pay royalty. The change also gave the bank an opportunity to resolve brand confusion created by several shareholder-unrelated entities using the UTI brand.[1]
The name “Axis” was inspired by the mathematical definition of an axis, a line of reference around which everything revolves.[2] The bank’s chairman at the time, P.J. Nayak, approved the name.[2]
Before the rebranding, the bank had indicated it would retain its burgundy colour used in the then-current logo.[3] The new logo was derived from the alphabet “A”.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to reporting from the time of the rebranding, the new logo features two strokes. The first stroke depicts forward growth, while the second stroke signifies a solid support system. The two thick strokes also connote solidity and security.[5] The name “Axis” itself was described as simple, connoting solidity and stature, and conveying a sense of authority and credibility.[5]
The logo’s primary colour is maroon, commonly referenced with the hex code #800000.[6] The bank’s decision to retain its burgundy colour from the UTI era was reported before the rebranding was finalized.[3]
Typography and Design
The logo’s graphic element is constructed from geometric blocks forming a triangular “A” shape, built from a diamond block and a trapezoid line.[7] The wordmark “AXIS BANK” appears alongside the symbol in a straightforward sans-serif style. The overall composition pairs the geometric mark with the bank’s name in a clean, direct layout that has remained consistent since 2007.
