IDBI Bank Limited, an Indian financial institution headquartered in Mumbai, has undergone several distinct visual identity changes since its founding in 1964. The bank’s current logo features an orange circular symbol with a white silhouette of a person, paired with the “IDBI BANK” wordmark in a bold sans-serif typeface.[1]
Design and History
The bank’s visual identity has evolved through at least three major redesigns. The earliest documented logo used navy blue capital letters. In February 2001, IDBI Bank launched a new brand identity created by Equus Advertising, which had been tasked with cultivating a distinct retail banking image for the bank.[2] The new identity appropriated the lowercase “i” to signify the individual in the bank, the consumer, and the bank itself. The words “idbi bank” were italicised and set in lowercase because of their relevance to the Internet age.[3] The logo was transformed from an earlier stiff “I” to a more relaxed, tilted “i” to show humbleness and a readiness to serve customers.[4] The bank also adopted the customer-service mantra “What can I do for you?” at this time.[5]
In November 2004, IDBI Ltd unveiled another new corporate logo at a media gathering in Mumbai, depicting the institution’s transition.[6] The new logo comprised a symbol and a logotype in a horizontal style. The teal green backdrop in the logo conveyed the pro-active role essayed by IDBI as a major financial institution in the realm of industry.[6] This teal and italic design was later replaced by the current orange-and-white mark, which some customers found less appealing than the earlier teal version.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current logo’s orange circle contains a white silhouette of a person, reflecting the bank’s customer-centric approach.[1] The symbol has also been described as resembling a lotus flower, an important symbol in Indian culture, with the dot at the top making it look like a person’s silhouette.[7] The earlier 2004 teal logo was chosen with the “international color of the millennium” selected for its brand design, representing flexibility and inclination toward retail customers.[4]
Typography and Design
The current wordmark reads “IDBI BANK” in a bold sans-serif typeface.[1] The 2001 identity used lowercase italic lettering for “idbi bank,” a deliberate departure from the earlier capital-letter format that was tied to Internet-age relevance.[3] The 2004 redesign introduced an international typeface for the logotype, paired with a teal green backdrop.[6]
