Flexport is a global freight forwarding and logistics platform founded in 2013 by Ryan Petersen in San Francisco. The company’s visual identity was comprehensively reimagined in early 2019 by the New York-based design and innovation company Firstborn, which created the brand system from the ground up, including the logo, color palette, typography, iconography, and even airplane liveries.[1]
Design and History
In late March 2019, Flexport announced a new brand identity, including a new logo, design system, and website visuals.[2] The rebrand accompanied the company’s positioning as a “global trade operating system,” a model combining technology, logistics infrastructure, and supply chain expertise.[2]
Firstborn, a design and innovation company based in New York, led the rebrand. The agency described its goal as taking the Flexport brand “from humble freight forwarder to a place worthy of their ambition and vision as a global leader in trade.”[1] The project was led by Creative Lead and Brand Strategy Dave Snyder, Associate Creative Director Jess Tainsh, Design and Art Direction Dan Lemperle, and Tech Lead Drew Dahlman.[1]
The current logo is a wordmark of the company’s full name, described by Flexport as “a visual embodiment of our commitment to innovation, making global commerce so easy there will be more of it.”[3] The full-color version features a Midnight Blue wordmark intended for light-colored backgrounds, while a reverse version uses a white wordmark for dark or Midnight Blue backgrounds.[3]
Flexport also introduced an F-mark icon that abstracts the letter “F,” incorporating a boat’s hull overlapping a half globe. The icon is reserved for situations where logo legibility is compromised and is not paired with the wordmark.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Flexport’s announcement of the new brand, the coral-red square at the end of the logo represents shipping containers and data packets, described as the core assets of Flexport’s development. The company also stated that the square represents a declaration of change and a mark left on an outdated industry.[2]
The F-mark icon’s design, showing a boat’s hull overlapping a half globe, visually ties the brand to both maritime shipping and global reach.[3]
Typography and Design
Flexport’s core color palette consists of three main neutral colors: Midnight Blue, Cloud White, and Terrain, which the company says brings warmth to the brand expression.[3] The full-color logo uses the Midnight Blue wordmark as its primary form.[3]
Firstborn described the new brand as “vastly more inviting and human,” created to position Flexport as a leader in global trade rather than merely a freight forwarder.[1] The agency’s art direction was designed to translate “that feeling of motion and transportation into a visual identity that is infused with energy.”[4]
