Quontic Bank is a New York City-based digital bank that operates as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). The bank’s visual identity centers on a distinctive orange wordmark and a stylized “Q” emblem, a look that was formally registered as a trademark in 2012 and later refined as part of the bank’s digital transformation.
Design and History
Quontic Bank began in 2009 when real estate developer and entrepreneur Steven Schnall purchased Golden First Bank, a small troubled bank in Great Neck, New York with $24 million in assets. Schnall moved the bank’s headquarters to Astoria, Queens, and did not open new branches, believing that brick-and-mortar retail banking would eventually die out. The bank focused on nonqualified mortgage lending to underserved communities as a for-profit CDFI. [1] [2]
The bank’s wordmark and emblem were registered as a trademark on May 8, 2012, under registration number 4139483. The registered mark consists of the word “QUONTIC” in all caps in orange, immediately to the left of the word “BANK” in all caps in brown. Above the words sits a stylized “Q” in white against an oval or rounded orange background. The colors orange, brown, and white are claimed as features of the mark. [3]
In 2018, Quontic adopted the tagline “The Adaptive Digital Bank” as part of its transformation into a digital-first institution. [4] Chief Marketing Officer Aaron Wollner has described how the bank created its brand guidelines and identity during a roughly 10-month project that ran alongside a website redesign. Wollner said Quontic made a conscious decision to be “a bit playful” in its branding, a choice he described as risky in banking because “trust is a major aspect of it.” [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The orange color has been part of Quontic’s identity since at least the 2012 trademark registration, where it appears in both the “QUONTIC” wordmark and the oval background of the “Q” emblem. [3] The bank’s orange interior was already noted in Astoria as early as 2015, before the digital rebrand. [6]
Wollner has described the bank’s brand identity as built on an “edgy, fintech-forward foundation” with a traditional bank structure on top, a metaphor he used when describing the bank’s virtual outpost in the Decentraland metaverse. He said the identity “took the shape” of that structure, combining playful, modern elements with the stability expected of a bank. [7]
Typography and Design
The registered trademark describes the wordmark as appearing in all capital letters, with “QUONTIC” in orange and “BANK” in brown. The emblem features a stylized “Q” in white set against an oval or rounded orange background. [3] No specific typeface or designer attribution has been publicly documented for the mark.
