Colorado State University (CSU), a public land-grant research university in Fort Collins, Colorado, uses a visual identity centered on the Ram’s Head Symbol and the University Signature. The university’s official brand guidelines describe the Ram’s Head Symbol, used in tandem with the CSU Signature, as the institution’s primary mark. The identity is built around the colors CSU Green, CSU Gold, and White, which the university describes as the backbone of its visual brand.
Design and History
The current CSU identity is governed by a centralized brand system. According to the university’s official brand website, core university units cannot develop independent logos and must use the full University Signature, which combines the Ram head with the university name, for brand equity and consistency. All official university logos and marks must be approved by University Marketing and Communications. The Ram’s Head Symbol is available in four versions: a primary version featuring a white Ram’s Head against a CSU Green background, a secondary version with a CSU Gold ring, a one-color reverse version for dark backgrounds, and a black version for light backgrounds. The symbol must be surrounded by clear space equal to the width of the ram’s face and may not appear smaller than 0.4 inches. [1] [2]
In Fall 2023, CSU launched a new visual brand language based on the theme “Find Your Energy.” The initiative, which succeeded the university’s “Charging Forward” branding effort, encompasses a redesigned homepage, a new color palette, branded gear, and advertising. The multi-year campaign was developed over roughly two years with feedback from various stakeholder groups. [3]
CSU also maintains a legacy wordmark that has been in use for more than 30 years. The university notes that this wordmark carries significant history but should rarely be used for externally facing marketing materials, with use limited to certain institutional applications such as signage and specific publications. [4]
A separate logo exists for the Colorado State University System, which oversees CSU, CSU Pueblo, and CSU Global. Unveiled in June 2020, the System logo incorporates one color from each campus: gold from CSU, blue from CSU Pueblo, and maroon from CSU Global, representing the uniqueness of each campus and the strength of their connection. The System developed the logo with internal staff rather than an outside agency. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Ram’s Head is the central symbol of CSU’s identity, reflecting the university’s athletic nickname, the Rams. The university’s brand guidelines describe “green and gold” as the backbone of the visual brand, noting that the colors are even referenced in the school’s fight song. CSU Green is the dominant color in the identity, and the university recommends it be present on all materials. [6]
The official CSU Green is specified as HEX #1E4D2B, RGB 30, 77, 43, CMYK 92, 18, 94, 61, and Pantone 357. CSU Gold is HEX #C8C372, RGB 200, 195, 114, CMYK 11, 6, 64, 13, and Pantone 617. White is the third primary brand color. [6]
Typography and Design
The University Signature combines the Ram’s Head Symbol with the university name in a horizontal lockup. According to the official brand site, the signature text is green on the standard mark and white on the reversed version for dark backgrounds. The legacy wordmark, used for more than 30 years, has a clear space requirement equal to the height of the “o” in “Colorado” and should always be used against a clean, contrasting background. [7] [4]
In athletics, the Ram’s Head mark has been updated to align with current brand standards. A 2022 refresh of the basketball court at Moby Arena incorporated updated fonts and marks, a larger Ram head at center court, and dual Ram horns, bringing the athletics brand “into the modern era” according to the athletics department.
