Suruga Bank, a regional bank headquartered in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, has used a distinctive geometric symbol mark since the mid-1960s. The mark was created by Kazumasa Nagai, a founding member of Nippon Design Center, who designed the bank’s trademark in 1965, the year of the bank’s 70th anniversary.[1] Nagai’s work for the bank is documented in multiple sources, including a 1965 poster he designed for the bank’s 70th anniversary, held in the collection of the Center for Contemporary Graphic Art.[2]
Design and History
The bank’s original name, 駿河銀行 (Suruga Ginko), was changed to the katakana rendering スルガ銀行 in 1990. According to the bank’s own disclosure materials, the change was part of an effort to “create a new corporate culture and climate, refresh the corporate image, and mark a new founding (the 101st year since establishment),” moving away from a name that was difficult to read, write, and unfamiliar to customers.[3] The bank’s English name is rendered as “SURUGA bank” on its official website.[4]
Nagai’s 1965 trademark for the bank marked a turning point in his career, after which he went on to design numerous corporate symbol marks for major Japanese organizations.[1] His portfolio of CI and logo work includes the Sapporo Winter Olympics emblem, Okinawa Ocean Expo, Tokyo Electric Power, Asahi Beer, JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives), Tsukuba Express, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Suruga Bank symbol combines abstract geometric forms with lettering. A published design reference describes the mark as composed of a blue trapezoid overall shape, symbolizing the bank’s strength, with curved lines of varying arcs representing the bank’s grasp of the financial industry’s pulse and its confidence in profitability.[6] This description appears in a Chinese design textbook, World Classic Logo Design, edited by Li Ying and published by Hunan University Press.[6]
Separately, the bank introduced a “Dream Guide” logo mark in connection with its “Aim25” initiative. According to the bank’s 2016 disclosure, this mark conveys the meaning of “looking straight at the future ideal state of Suruga, sincerely facing customers, actively listening to their voices, and serving as a guide leading customers to a more certain future.”[6]
Typography and Design
The bank’s current wordmark appears in both horizontal and vertical lockups on its official website, rendered in SVG format.[7] The English wordmark uses a lowercase “SURUGA” with a capital “bank” in a sans-serif style, as seen on the bank’s site and in signage photographs.[8] The specific typeface used has not been officially documented in available sources.
