Texas Dow Employees Credit Union, commonly known as TDECU, is a credit union headquartered in Lake Jackson, Texas, founded in 1955 by a group of Dow Chemical employees who pooled money to help a coworker purchase a refrigerator.[1] The credit union has since grown to become the largest credit union in Houston and the fourth largest in Texas, with more than $5.1 billion in assets and over 400,000 members.[1]
Design and History
The TDECU logo is a typographic wordmark featuring the acronym “TDECU” in bold, all-caps lettering. A vector version of the logo, uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in 2017, shows the mark rendered in a deep red color on a white background.[2] Brand asset tracking service Brandfetch lists the primary brand color as hex code #BB062C, a dark crimson red, alongside secondary colors including a light apricot and a deep teal.[3]
In June 2015, TDECU engaged the branding agency GDC for a branding strategy intended to better express the credit union’s values. According to the San Antonio Business Journal, the agency developed “a new brand voice and fresh identity” that positioned TDECU as more accessible and attainable to its members while helping it stand out among other financial institutions.[4] The article does not specify whether this engagement resulted in a new logo design or primarily a brand voice and messaging refresh.
In July 2014, TDECU secured a 10-year, $15-million naming rights agreement with the University of Houston, renaming the university’s football stadium as TDECU Stadium.[5] The stadium naming significantly increased the visibility of the TDECU wordmark across the Houston market.
In September 2024, TDECU announced plans to merge with Houston-based Space City Credit Union and rebrand as Space City Financial in the Greater Houston area, while continuing to use TDECU as its legal name.[6] According to the Houston Business Journal, TDECU was working through design elements of the rebrand, including logos and color schemes.[7] However, in July 2025, TDECU President and CEO Isaac Johnson said the rebrand had been delayed while the credit union explored additional merger opportunities in the Houston market, and that the Space City brand was not being abandoned.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo is a straightforward typographic wordmark without pictorial elements, and no official source provides a documented explanation of color symbolism or design intent. The red color of the wordmark is verifiable from the logo file itself and brand asset listings, but any claimed meaning behind that color is not supported by official documentation.[2][3]
Typography and Design
The TDECU logo consists of the five-letter acronym set in heavy, sans-serif capital letters with tight letter spacing, forming a single unified wordmark.[2] The specific typeface used in the logo has not been officially identified in available sources. The logo’s simple typographic construction allows it to scale effectively across applications ranging from branch signage to stadium branding, though this functional observation is not drawn from any official design documentation.
