Mineralni Vodi-Sofia is a Bulgarian mineral water brand whose visual identity was created by Stefan Kanchev, the graphic artist widely regarded as the “father of Bulgarian graphic design” and the “master of the trademark.”[1] Kanchev (1915-2001) produced around 1,600 logos over his career, including marks for the National Palace of Culture, Bulgarian National Television, and the Petrol fuel company.[1]
Design and History
The Mineralni Vodi logo appears in the official archive of Stefan Kanchev’s trademark designs hosted at stefankanchev.com, which catalogs his preserved signs and symbols.[2] The archive lists the mark simply as “Минерални води” (Mineral Waters), without a specific creation date attached to the entry.[2] The same archive also lists a separate entry for “ДСО „Рила” София” (State Economic Organization “Rila” Sofia), a clothing manufacturer, indicating the two marks are distinct works.[2]
Kanchev’s approach to logo design combined traditional Bulgarian art with modernist simplicity, a style that made his marks instantly recognizable across Bulgarian daily life.[3] He created more than 1,000 registered signs and symbols during his career, many of which dominated Bulgarian visual culture for generations.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The archive confirms only that the mark exists within his body of work, without commentary on its visual elements or meaning.[2]
Kanchev was known for his ability to combine letters, signs, ideas, and national identity in his trademarks, creating some of the most emblematic logos known to several generations of Bulgarians.[3] His work was recognized internationally: in 1967 he presented 23 logos at an exhibition organized by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), and in 1994 he was recognized as one of the ten best logo masters in the world alongside Paul Rand and Saul Bass.[4]
Typography and Design
Kanchev is credited as one of the pioneers of the modern Bulgarian font and graphic language, noted for the clear simplicity, precision, and unique accuracy of his execution.[3] [3]
