FPV Ford Performance Vehicles logo

FPV, short for Ford Performance Vehicles, was the high-performance vehicle division associated with Ford Australia. Established in 2002, FPV developed more powerful and specialized versions of Ford models, particularly the Falcon and its ute derivatives. The brand operated until 2014. [1] Although FPV existed for only a little over a decade, it became an important part of Australian performance-car culture through models such as the GT, GT-P, F6, GS and GT F.

FPV Meaning and History

The roots of FPV go back to Ford Australia’s performance work with British engineering company Tickford. In the early 1990s, Tickford Vehicle Engineering worked with Ford Australia on higher-performance Falcon variants, including XR-series cars. [2] That relationship later developed into the Ford Tickford Experience before being replaced by Ford Performance Vehicles in 2002. FPV became Ford Australia’s dedicated premium-performance operation, producing modified Falcon sedans and utes with upgraded engines, suspension, braking and styling. The first FPV GT models arrived shortly after the BA Falcon was introduced in 2002. [1] Over its lifetime, FPV produced performance vehicles using both V8 and turbocharged six-cylinder engines. The range included the GT, GT-P, GT E, F6, F6 E, GS and several limited-edition models.

What Does FPV Stand For?

FPV stands for Ford Performance Vehicles. The name was deliberately straightforward. It identified the operation as Ford’s Australian performance-vehicle division rather than creating a completely separate marque disconnected from Ford. That relationship was also reflected in the way FPV vehicles were marketed and badged: FPV had its own emblem and model identities, but the vehicles remained closely tied to Ford Australia and the Falcon platform.

The FPV Logo

The FPV logo combines a horizontally oriented oval badge, a stylized bird-head emblem and the FPV initials. The bird is generally interpreted visually as an eagle or falcon-like profile, fitting the performance character of the brand and its close association with Ford Falcon models. However, there does not appear to be strong publicly available primary documentation confirming the exact species, designer or official symbolic explanation of the bird. For that reason, it is safer to describe the mark as a stylized bird profile rather than assign meanings such as aggression, danger, speed or domination unless those meanings are documented by FPV or Ford.

FPV Logo Design

The emblem uses sharp, angular forms in both the bird illustration and the FPV lettering. The bird profile faces left and sits above or alongside the initials depending on the badge treatment. The eye, beak and head are simplified into a small number of hard-edged shapes, allowing the emblem to remain recognizable when reproduced as a physical vehicle badge. The FPV initials are set in bold italicized lettering with extended horizontal forms. The slant and sharp terminals give the wordmark a technical, performance-oriented appearance, but any claim that a particular stroke was intentionally designed to mirror the direction of the bird should be treated as visual interpretation rather than documented fact.

FPV Badge Variations

FPV used several visual treatments of the same basic emblem during its existence. Depending on the vehicle, trim and application, the badge could appear:
  • with a blue background
  • with a black or very dark background
  • in silver or metallic finishes
  • as a flatter graphic treatment in print and promotional materials
  • as a dimensional physical badge on the vehicle itself
These variations generally preserved the same recognizable bird-and-FPV composition rather than introducing a completely new identity.

FPV Font and Lettering

FPV logo lettering and emblem The FPV lettering uses a custom-looking italic sans-serif style with wide, angular letterforms. The characters are heavily modified for logo use, particularly the shapes of the F and V. The V extends horizontally and helps create a compact composition with the bird emblem. Some commercial fonts may resemble the FPV lettering, but there is no reliable public documentation confirming that the logo was based on Snasm Heavy Italic or another specific retail typeface. It is therefore better to describe it as custom or modified lettering.

FPV Logo Colors

The FPV identity commonly appeared in combinations of blue, black, white and metallic silver. Physical vehicle badges often used metallic finishes, while printed and digital versions could appear in flatter blue, black or monochrome treatments. There is no strong evidence that FPV officially assigned psychological meanings such as strength, aggression, confidence or determination to these colors, so those interpretations should not be presented as fact.

FPV Models

FPV produced several major model families during its existence.
  • GT: the core V8 performance sedan.
  • GT-P: a more highly equipped version of the GT.
  • GT E: a more luxury-oriented performance sedan.
  • F6: powered by Ford Australia’s turbocharged inline-six engine.
  • F6 E: a more luxurious version of the F6.
  • GS: positioned as an entry point into the FPV range.
  • F6X: a performance version of the Ford Territory and FPV’s main move beyond Falcon-derived vehicles.
GoAuto records the FPV GT as running from 2003 to 2014, while the F6 remained in production until August 2014. [1]

The End of FPV

Ford Performance Vehicles ended operations in 2014. Its final years included models such as the GT R-Spec and the GT F 351, which served as the final FPV GT. The “F” in GT F referred to “Final,” while 351 referenced the historic Falcon GT engine designation. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2} FPV disappeared as a standalone Australian performance brand before Ford ended local Falcon production in 2016. Ford Australia continues to sell performance vehicles today, but under Ford’s broader global performance and racing strategy rather than through the FPV name. [3]

Why the FPV Logo Is Memorable

The FPV identity worked because it clearly separated the performance division from regular Ford models while still retaining a strong connection to Ford Australia. The oval format fits naturally into automotive badging, while the stylized bird and compact FPV initials create a symbol that can work independently from the full Ford Performance Vehicles name. Unlike many performance sub-brands that rely entirely on typography, FPV had a distinct pictorial emblem, which helped give the brand its own identity during its relatively short existence.
