Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), Japan’s public broadcasting corporation, has used a series of wordmark-based logos since adopting its current name in 1946. The broadcaster’s visual identity has evolved through several distinct phases, from simple sans-serif lettering to the well-known “three eggs” symbol mark introduced in 1995, and most recently to a simplified wordmark in 2020.
Design and History
After NHK adopted its current name in 1946, the organization used a simple sans-serif wordmark based on the initials of “Nippon Hoso Kyokai.” An italic version of this wordmark was used from 1962 through 1995, making it the longest-serving logo in NHK’s history.[1]
In 1995, to mark the 70th anniversary of broadcasting, NHK launched a corporate identity program called “NEXT10” and introduced a new logo mark.[2] The new design was created by Nippon Design Center (NDC).[3] The mark, which resembles three eggs or interlocking rings arranged to form the letter “N,” was selected from more than 5,000 design proposals submitted during the identity program.[2]
In March 2020, NHK simplified its brand identity by removing the three egg-shaped elements from the logo, leaving only the “NHK” lettering. The new wordmark retained the rounded character of the 1995 version but reduced the italic slant by approximately 3 degrees and tightened the letter spacing.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 1995 logo mark was designed to represent new life, infinite possibilities, and a society where people support one another. The egg shape also references the “Columbus egg” anecdote, symbolizing creativity and the role of NHK as a broadcasting institution that builds the foundation of knowledge.[3]
According to Hide Nakaya, the NHK art director who designed the mark, the egg motif was chosen because eggs represent the source of life, the origin of ideas (as in the Columbus egg story), and a sense of security and stability. The three eggs support each other to form the shape of the letter “N,” reflecting NHK’s commitment to prioritizing viewer satisfaction and approachability.[2]
Typography and Design
The 2020 wordmark continues the thick, rounded sans-serif letterforms introduced with the 1995 identity, with adjustments to the slant and spacing.[1] NHK’s corporate color is gray, which is used alongside the RGB primary colors (red, green, blue) in channel-specific applications to represent the diversity of NHK’s programming categories.[4]
