The Lead Development Association was a UK-based industry body founded in 1946 to support market development for lead. Its roots later carried into the International Lead Association, which describes the original organization as its predecessor.[1] The association was based at 34 Berkeley Square, London, W1.[2]

Design and History

The Lead Development Association logo was designed in 1968 by the London studio Crosby, Fletcher, Forbes, the partnership of Theo Crosby, Alan Fletcher and Colin Forbes.[3] The studio was formed in 1965 when architect Theo Crosby joined the graphic design partnership of Alan Fletcher and Colin Forbes, replacing Bob Gill.[4] Crosby, Fletcher, Forbes later evolved into Pentagram in 1972.[5]

The mark is classified as a logotype with initials, described as using two letters, the letters P and D, along with math symbols.[3] The design is categorized as both representational and semantic in its approach.[3]

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented symbolism for the Lead Development Association mark is limited. The logo’s categorization as a representational and semantic logotype with the letters P and D and math symbols indicates it combined the association’s initials with graphic elements carrying conceptual weight, though no official explanation of the intended meaning has been located.[3]
