Stocznia Gdynia S.A. was a Polish shipyard based in Gdynia, established in 1922. The company operated under this name from 1991, when the state enterprise was transformed into a joint-stock company, until it entered liquidation in 2009 and ceased production activity.[1][2]
Design and History
The shipyard’s visual identity was closely tied to its physical presence in Gdynia. A prominent gantry crane, commissioned in February 2002, carried the name “STOCZNIA GDYNIA S.A.” in letters eight meters high, visible from over six kilometers away.[3] This crane replaced an earlier one destroyed by a hurricane in December 1999, which had been recognizable for years through the giant inscription “Stocznia im. Komuny Paryskiej” (Paris Commune Shipyard), the shipyard’s name during the communist era.[3]
In June 2017, the “STOCZNIA GDYNIA S.A.” inscription was removed from the crane and replaced with the name and logo of Crist, the company that had acquired the shipyard’s assets following its liquidation.[3] The shipyard’s official website, which remained active during the liquidation period, displayed the company name alongside the tagline “TRADITION, MODERNITY, QUALITY.”[4]
Following the shipyard’s closure, its former grounds were taken over by several companies, including Stocznia Nauta, Stocznia Crist, and Stocznia Remontowa Vistal, as well as the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone.[2]
