Marshalls plc is a United Kingdom-based manufacturer of sustainable solutions for the built environment, supplying hard landscaping, building, and roofing products. The company traces its origins to the 1890s, when Solomon Marshall began supplying stone from Yorkshire. [1]
Design and History
The current Marshalls logo is a wordmark accompanied by an abstract symbol. The mark is rendered in red, orange, coral, and gold tones, a palette that gives the brand a distinctive presence across corporate materials, signage, and digital media. The abstract form is designed to communicate modernity without literal representation, and the overall composition scales cleanly from app icons to large-format signage.
In May 2021, Marshalls appointed Manchester-based agency Truth Creative to build a brand toolkit and guidelines following a competitive pitch. The work was intended to create a consistent and more creative approach to how Marshalls communicates across its range of brands, ensuring they all look and feel like part of the same brand family. The brand guidelines and toolkit covered brand architecture, photography, advertising, internal communications, motion, social media posts, and collateral for direct mail, point of sale, and event signage. [2] [3]
Chris Frankland, Marketing Director for Marshalls, explained the rationale: over the previous few years the company had brought a number of different businesses into the Marshalls Group and launched a series of new divisions. The new creative approach enabled the company to consistently apply its brand across all communications, for all divisions and product areas. [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The red, orange, coral, and gold palette of the Marshalls mark conveys energy and ambition. The abstract form communicates modernity and forward-thinking values without literal representation, while the overall composition creates a balanced, professional identity suited to construction and engineering. The interplay of these colors produces a cohesive brand system that translates effectively across corporate materials, signage, and digital media.
Typography and Design
The Marshalls brand name employs a clean typeface that balances modernity with readability. The typography supports the overall brand identity without competing with the graphic elements, ensuring the wordmark remains legible across all applications.
