Instituto de Deseño

The Instituto de Diseño, also known as the Instituto de Diseño Fundación Neumann-INCE (IDD), was Venezuela's first design school, founded in Caracas in 1964. Its mark was designed by Gerd Leufert in 1964.

The Instituto de Diseño, also known as the Instituto de Diseño Fundación Neumann-INCE (IDD), was Venezuela’s first design school, founded in Caracas in 1964 as a joint initiative between the private business group of industrialist Hans Neumann and the state’s Instituto Nacional de Capacitación Educativa (INCE).[1] The school operated until its closure in 1995.[2]

Design and History

The Instituto de Diseño’s mark was designed by Gerd Leufert in 1964, the same year the school was founded.[3] Leufert, a German-born graphic designer who emigrated to Venezuela in 1951, is credited with establishing the foundations for the graphic design profession in the country.[4] He was also a founding member and professor at the Instituto de Diseño Fundación Neumann-INCE.[4]

Leufert’s emblem for the institute was among a body of marks he produced throughout his career. In 1984, the Galería de Arte Nacional published La Emblemática de Gerd Leufert, a book compiling 100 of his brand designs selected by Venezuelan editorial designer Álvaro Sotillo.[5] A separate project, Visibilia, documented 73 marks Leufert created between the 1940s and the first half of the 1960s, a period that includes the Instituto de Diseño emblem.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented descriptions of the Instituto de Diseño mark’s specific symbolic meaning are scarce. The school’s original purpose was to train industrial designers, though the country’s productive dynamics steered it toward graphic design.[1] Leufert’s emblems are generally characterized as products of a functionalist aesthetic, with his signs resulting from a broad expressive spectrum.[7]

The institute’s archives, which could have provided further documentation of the mark’s design intent, were lost during the school’s transfer to INCE administration in the mid-1970s and again in a later move.[1]
