Primer is a network of teacher-led K-8 microschools founded in 2019, built on the belief that taking kids seriously leads them to take themselves seriously. The organization’s visual identity has undergone two distinct phases: an early playful brand developed around 2022, and a complete overhaul led by Toronto-based creative studio newkid that introduced the current wordmark system.

Design and History

Primer’s original brand identity, developed in 2022 by designer Jessica Strelioff with creative partner Danielle LaRoy, used a vibrant gradient color palette and custom illustrations by Paulina Almira. The system was designed as “an invitation to explore these worlds of wonder and step into the surreal,” with a verbal identity that spoke directly to kids through open-ended questions and short sentences. [1]

An earlier logo iteration, created by Réplica Studio, featured a wordmark with a distinctive “m” rendered as a playful zigzag or squiggle that children could reinterpret as wings, comic characters, or other imaginative forms. The mark was designed to serve as a creative canvas for kids, with the squiggle accented in purple while the rest of the text remained black. [2]

With national expansion underway, Primer partnered with newkid for a complete brand overhaul. According to newkid, “the original brand could no longer carry the ambition of the organization.” The name stayed, but everything else was rebuilt, including brand strategy, the full identity system, website, and a launch film. [3]

The rebrand was anchored in the strategic platform “School for What’s Ahead,” which frames a return to foundational learning as the most serious possible preparation for the future. Newkid’s co-founders rejected both old-world academia aesthetics (engraved crests, heraldic elements, deep serif typefaces) and tech-led design languages that felt like app interfaces rather than schools. [4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The current identity is built on a modular grid derived from the name itself: building blocks. The grid is an homage to graph paper that opens up as it extends, signaling the agency that arrives once a child has the fundamentals in hand. Newkid pushed the concept toward something flexible and expressive, “much like what happens when children master the fundamentals and begin approaching new challenges with confidence.” [4]

A blue period after “Primer.” signs every communication, giving the wordmark “a sense of confidence and definitiveness, while also planting the seed for the wider visual system, acting both as a period and the first ‘building block.'” [4]

The color system threads blue, yellow, orange, and green through the brand, with red deliberately excluded. Design Director Clea Forkert noted that in education, red “can carry some negative associations, like marked-up tests.” Grade-cohort color coding (K-2, 3-5, 6-8) carries wayfinding logic through the entire system, from the website to campus signage. [4] [5]

Typography and Design

The wordmark is set in Sirca, a then-unreleased flared serif typeface from Parisian foundry Edito Type. Creative Director Rich Brown described it as “rooted in Walter Käch’s mid-century serif experiments,” carrying “a sense of familiarity and academic weight, but through a lens that felt distinctly contemporary.” The studio tested serif directions that felt too institutional or decorative before landing on Sirca’s subtle flare, compact proportions, and balance of geometric structure and human warmth. [4]

Söhne, by Klim Type Foundry, serves as the secondary typeface for body copy and interfaces, keeping everything legible at any scale. [3] [6]

The photography brief for the rebrand was non-negotiable: no models. Every image features real Primer students photographed at real Primer schools, shot by photographer Luis Mora. The launch film, The Orator, centers on a student named MarQuis delivering an adapted version of the Primer manifesto from behind a podium. [4]
