EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG is a listed energy company based in Karlsruhe, Germany. Its visual identity centers on a typographic wordmark combined with an orange impulse line, a design element that has defined the brand since the early 2000s.

Design and History

EnBW began an extensive brand positioning process in 2004, accompanied by a complete overhaul of the corporate design. The design agency identis (design-gruppe joseph pölzelbauer) served as CD-Lead-Agentur for more than five years, giving the EnBW brand its face. The brand core, “giving impulses and receiving impulses,” is expressed in the impulse line, which complements the EnBW wordmark as a meaningful graphic element. The impulse line bridges levels and pushes into new spaces, creating a picture of energy flow, connection and dynamism. [1] [2]

In 2013, EnBW set a new strategic direction, moving from a classic energy company toward an innovative and sustainable partner for energy and infrastructure. The corporate design was further developed by Strichpunkt Design to convey this new attitude and corporate values. The primary colors Tiefenblau (deep blue) and Horizontorange (horizon orange) shaped the new appearance and ensured high recognition value. [3] [4]

In 2022, EnBW underwent another brand refresh, developed by the agency MUTABOR. The new brand identity was intended to communicate the company’s step toward becoming an innovative and high-performance infrastructure partner. The dynamic impulse, derived from the logo, became an independent style element and an eye-catching information carrier. [5]

Meaning and Symbolism

According to EnBW’s official corporate design documentation, the logo is the company’s most important sign and anchor point. The combination of the orange impulse line and the blue wordmark clearly positions the brand and is now maximally flexible in use, from out-of-home advertising to social media posts. The impulse, derived from the logo, has become an independent and dynamic sign of the brand appearance. [6]

The new, intensive Impulsorange (impulse orange) forms a lively and self-confident contrast to the brand-defining Tiefenblau (deep blue). The two harmonious neutral colors white and warm gray calm the overall effect and provide space. [6]

Typography and Design

Typography is a central recognition feature of EnBW. For the first time, a specially developed EnBW font family was created. Its character is derived from the impulse and the wordmark, and accessibility features were considered during its development. [6]

For the 2022 refresh, MUTABOR complemented the design system with new, self-confident typography, lively and natural secondary colors, and new iconographic elements. [5]
