Acer Inc. is a Taiwanese multinational information and communications technology company founded on August 1, 1976 under the name Multitech, with its headquarters in Xizhi, New Taipei City, Taiwan. The company adopted the “Acer” name in 1987, a word derived from Latin meaning sharp, capable, and decisive, according to Acer’s own corporate history. [1]
The current Acer logo is a wordmark consisting of lowercase “acer” letterforms in a bright green shade. The mark was introduced in April 2011 as a refinement of the previous logo, with the company stating that the update was an evolutionary step rather than a complete visual reinvention. [2]
Design and History
Acer has changed its corporate logo several times since its founding, with each change tied to a different stage of the company’s development. The first change came in 1983 when the company established its own “Multitech” brand for export markets. The second came in 1987 when the Acer brand was created as part of the company’s internationalization push. The third change occurred in 2001, when Acer split off its contract manufacturing business to focus on its branded business, and the logo shifted from the capitalized “Acer” to lowercase “acer.” [2]
The 1987 logo featured a symbol on the left side depicting an arrow, representing drive and speed, paired with a diamond shape on the right representing solidity and value. This mark remained in use for 13 years. [3]
In March 2001, Acer replaced the arrow-and-diamond emblem with a purely typographic logo. The new mark used rounded dark green lowercase letters, with the “e” given a distinctive flowing treatment to signal the company’s move from PC hardware into e-solutions. The design was created by Landor Associates, a San Francisco-based brand consultancy. [4] [5]
The current logo, unveiled on April 11, 2011, modified the 2001 wordmark by softening the letterforms and replacing the dark green with a brighter, more vibrant green. Acer stated that the new color was chosen because it conveys more energy and vitality, and because green is uncommon among corporate brands, helping the company stand out in marketing. [6] The new logo was rolled out across Acer’s website, advertising, offices, and products, with products carrying the new mark shipping from June 2011. [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 1987 arrow-and-diamond emblem carried documented symbolism: the arrow represented drive and speed, while the diamond represented solidity and value. [3]
For the 2011 update, Acer’s stated rationale was that the brighter green gives the logo a more youthful and active feel, and that the uncommon color helps the brand stand out in a market where green is rarely used by other companies. [7] Acer also said the new identity expresses the company’s pursuit of continuous vitality and growth. [2]
Typography and Design
The 2001 logo introduced lowercase letterforms with a distinctive flowing “e” that stood out from the other characters, signaling Acer’s transition into e-solutions. [8] The 2011 redesign removed the sharp and rough edges of the previous letterforms, producing a smoother, more rounded appearance. The distinctive contrast between the sans-serif letters and the handwritten-style “e” was dissolved in the new version, which adopted a more uniform typographic treatment. [9]
