SMIC, formally Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, is a Chinese semiconductor foundry headquartered in Shanghai. The company’s visual identity centers on a wordmark and abstract symbol that has been in use since a notable rebranding in 2011.
Design and History
SMIC’s current logo was unveiled on March 15, 2011, at the SEMICON China trade show. The redesign process began in 2010 when the company solicited creative concepts from its employees, selecting from several hundred submissions to serve as the basis for professional design work. The new mark was introduced alongside a company statement that SMIC was “standing at a new starting point” and moving forward again.[1]
The logo features the uppercase letters “SMIC” in blue, accompanied by a circular symbol rendered in orange and red tones. The Chinese name 中芯国际 appears in smaller text beneath the English wordmark.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to the company’s 2011 announcement, the color choices carry specific meaning. The “technology blue” represents a high-tech enterprise, conveying stability, innovation, and efficiency. The orange and golden-yellow gradient represents SMIC’s passion, vitality, and the joy of continuous harvest.[1]
Some design commentary has described the abstract symbol as resembling two interlocking “CS” shapes, suggesting cross-strait cooperation and partnership, with the overall form also evoking a handshake representing unity and collaboration.[3] This interpretation, however, comes from third-party design commentary rather than official company documentation.
Typography and Design
The SMIC wordmark uses a bold, uppercase sans-serif typeface for the English letters, with the Chinese company name 中芯国际 set in smaller type below. The abstract symbol sits to the left of the wordmark, creating a two-part lockup that scales across corporate materials and digital applications.[4]
