Saitek is a designer and manufacturer of consumer electronics, founded in 1979 by Swiss technologist Eric Winkler. The company was known as SciSys-W Ltd. until 1987, and it initially specialized in dedicated chess computers before expanding into PC gaming peripherals and flight simulation equipment.[1]
Design and History
Saitek’s visual identity has historically been a typographic wordmark. The company’s logo, as archived on Wikimedia Commons, is a simple text-based mark with the “Saitek” name set in a clean, sans-serif style.[2] The wordmark format places the brand name at the center of the identity, letting the lettering itself carry the visual recognition.
The brand underwent significant ownership changes that affected its identity. In 2007, Mad Catz acquired Saitek for US$30 million, and the name continued to be used, particularly for PC flight simulator products.[3] During this period, Mad Catz deliberately preserved Saitek’s original logo and brand image rather than replacing them with the parent company’s branding.[4]
In September 2016, Logitech acquired Saitek from Mad Catz for $13 million, taking over the simulation brand specializing in computer joysticks.[3] Following this acquisition, the Saitek website began displaying the Logitech logo, and most Saitek products were subsequently rebranded as Logitech G products.[5][6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented symbolism for the Saitek wordmark is limited. The brand’s identity was described by Mad Catz’s branding leadership in 2013 as representing “Reality,” particularly in the context of the Pro Flight series of simulation products.[4] This positioning aligned with Saitek’s focus on realistic flight simulation hardware rather than abstract visual symbolism.
