Sharp Corporation, the Japanese electronics manufacturer founded in Tokyo in 1912, uses a simple red uppercase wordmark reading “SHARP” as its corporate logo. The company name and trademark derive from the “Ever-Sharp Pencil,” a mechanical pencil invented by founder Tokuji Hayakawa in 1915 that became the genesis of the company. [1] [2]
Design and History
Sharp’s current uppercase red wordmark has been in use since the 1960s. Before that period, the company used a distinctly different logo featuring lowercase lettering paired with the Japanese katakana characters “シャープ.” The transition to the uppercase red “SHARP” wordmark occurred during the 1960s and has remained in continuous use since then, with only minor adjustments over the decades. [3]
Analysis of Sharp product photography suggests the current wordmark took its present form around 1964, when the company introduced the CS-10A, the world’s first all-transistor-diode electronic desktop calculator. The wordmark on that product closely matches the letterforms, spacing, and weight of the logo still in use today. [4] [5]
In 2012, Sharp created a special 100th Anniversary logo to mark the company’s centennial. The anniversary mark was designed to symbolize three themes: dedication to “one of a kind” products, past achievements, and expectations for the future. The two interlocking rings of the logo represent a spiral from the past to the future. It was used throughout 2012 across television commercials, print advertisements, websites, product catalogs, and business cards. [6]
For its 110th anniversary in 2022, Sharp again created a commemorative logo. The 110th anniversary mark features gently changing colors that express transformation toward a new management model, with green and blue representing the image of ESG business. [7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Sharp name and trademark trace directly to the Ever-Sharp Pencil. After progressive improvements, including the development of thin lead in 1916, Hayakawa’s mechanical pencil was renamed the “Ever-Ready Sharp Pencil,” later shortened to the “Ever-Sharp Pencil.” Sharp’s official corporate history states that this first product marks the true genesis of Sharp Corporation, and that the Sharp name and trademark are recognized around the world thanks to this invention. [1] Sharp’s official company profile similarly confirms that the current company name and its registered trademark derive from this product. [8]
The red color of the Sharp wordmark is specified in brand materials. The SHARP/NEC Display Solutions logo guidelines, which use the Sharp red, specify RGB values of R230, G0, B13 and PANTONE 186C for the red color. [9]
Typography and Design
The Sharp wordmark uses a bold, condensed sans-serif letterform with substantial stroke weight. The letterforms feature clean geometry with consistent weight throughout, and the tight spacing gives the mark a strong horizontal presence. The all-caps treatment clearly identifies the word as a proper noun and established brand. [4]
The SHARP logo is a registered trademark of Sharp Corporation and is used in a unified manner across products, advertisements, billboards, packaging, and sales promotion materials. [10]
