Oil India Limited (OIL) is an Indian public sector exploration and production company headquartered in Noida, with operational headquarters in Duliajan, Assam. The company traces its roots to 1889, when the first commercial discovery of crude oil in India was made in Digboi, and it operates today as an integrated energy company engaged in crude oil and natural gas exploration, development, and production.[1][2]
Design and History
Oil India launched a new look logo, along with redefined Vision and Values, on 3 November 2023. The launch took place during a meeting of the Consultative Committee of Members of Parliament for the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, held at Kaziranga, with Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri unveiling the identity.[3][4]
According to the company’s official logo guidelines, the new mark is built around the letters O and I, which represent the O and I in Oil India. The red and black elements in the logo stand for the core activity of the company, exploration and production of hydrocarbon. The black reflects the colour of liquid black gold, while the red resonates with the vibrancy of an energy company where natural gas is a dominant resource.[5]
The company’s website displays the tagline “Conquering Newer Horizons” alongside the Oil India name and logo.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The O and I shapes in the logo are described by Oil India as distinctive and easily identifiable elements, directly referencing the company’s name. The red and black colour scheme carries documented meaning: black represents the crude oil that is the company’s core product, while red reflects the energy and natural gas resources that form a dominant part of its operations.[5]
The 2023 rebrand was framed by the company as a transformative step, symbolizing OIL’s dedication towards progress, innovation, and values, while continuing to energize the nation and contribute to its economic growth.[4]
Typography and Design
Oil India’s official logo guidelines specify that the font style and arrangement of the O and I shapes are part of the distinctive identity system, with the O and I symbol described as a distinctive and easily identifiable element of the brand.[5] The company’s website pairs the logo with the tagline “Conquering Newer Horizons” in its standard brand presentation.[6]
