Wood plc, formerly John Wood Group PLC, is a UK-based consulting and engineering company operating across energy and materials markets. The company’s current visual identity dates to October 2017, when it was introduced alongside a major corporate rebrand following the acquisition of Amec Foster Wheeler.
Design and History
The current Wood logo was launched on October 9, 2017, when the company completed its $2.7 billion all-share acquisition of London-based Amec Foster Wheeler. As part of the merger, the combined company adopted the shortened name “Wood” and unveiled a new logo featuring lowercase lettering with a period at the end, rendered as “wood.” [1] The rebrand was confirmed by the Houston Business Journal, which reported that the newly combined company’s name became simply “Wood” according to its newly launched website. [2]
Prior to this rebrand, the company had already consolidated several of its subsidiaries. Wood Group Mustang, Wood Group PSN, and Wood Group Kenny merged into Wood Group starting July 1, 2016, with a new company logo released on August 1, 2016. [3] The 2017 rebrand went further, dropping “Group” from the name entirely and unifying the entire organization under the single “wood.” wordmark.
The rebranding effort was substantial enough that the company used a 4K Ultra HD display to reveal the new identity to employees and generate excitement before the public launch. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The lowercase wordmark with a trailing period was a deliberate departure from the company’s previous identity. The new name “Wood” and its minimalist typographic treatment reflected the company’s repositioning after the Amec Foster Wheeler merger, presenting a unified brand to its customer base across the energy and industrial sectors. [5] The company describes itself as “one of the world’s leading engineering and consultancy companies operating across Energy and Materials markets.” [6]
Typography and Design
The Wood logo is a purely typographic wordmark consisting of lowercase lettering followed by a period. The company maintains strict usage guidelines for the logo, requiring that it “must not be changed or altered in any way” and “must always be shown consistently and in accordance to the guidelines provided.” [7] The official media resources page provides high-resolution logos and approved imagery for editorial use, with all images credited to Wood PLC.
