Magellan Health, Inc. is an American managed health care company founded in 1969 as Charter Medical Corporation, a psychiatric hospital chain headquartered in Macon, Georgia. The company adopted the Magellan name in the mid-1990s and has since undergone several brand evolutions, most notably a comprehensive rebranding in 2014 that introduced a mosaic-based visual identity.
Design and History
Magellan Health’s corporate roots trace to 1969, when the company was established as Charter Medical Corporation. The Magellan name came into use in the 1990s, and the company operated as Magellan Health Services, Inc. for many years before simplifying its name to Magellan Health, Inc. in June 2014. The name change was announced alongside a new brand that the company said “visually illustrates our complete person-to-person perspective.” [1]
In February 2014, Magellan Health Services introduced a new visual system for its business lines, which were rebranded as Magellan Healthcare, Magellan Rx Management and NIA Magellan. The company described the new identity as “clean, crisp and striking, using a mosaic structure to illustrate the different parts of our company coming together to provide a unique vision of care.” [2]
The 2014 rebranding was developed with the brand consultancy MBLM, which described the work as creating “a distinctive brand identity using the mosaic visual metaphor, showing pieces making up a whole in a colorful and vibrant way.” The project also involved a “One Magellan” brand strategy to unify the company’s various business lines. [3]
Prior to the 2014 redesign, Magellan Health’s logo was a “box” mark. The design firm Pettus Creative, which was brought in to help guide the rebranding process, noted that “the initial engagement started as a small tweak to the existing ‘box’ logo. Pretty quickly, everyone recognized the need to signal larger change.” [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The mosaic structure of the 2014 Magellan Health logo was explicitly designed to illustrate “the different parts of our company coming together to provide a unique vision of care,” according to then-chairman and CEO Barry M. Smith. [2] MBLM further described the mosaic as “showing pieces making up a whole in a colorful and vibrant way,” reinforcing the idea of integrated, whole-person care. [3]
An earlier Magellan Health Services trademark, registered in 1999, included a fleur-de-lis design element within a decorative circular border, according to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records. [5]
Typography and Design
Detailed typography specifications for the current Magellan Health logo have not been publicly documented. The 2014 identity was developed through a collaborative process involving MBLM, which provided “key conceptual creative and content” for the brand rollout, and Pettus Creative, which contributed research, strategy, design and production work during the transition.
