Relic Entertainment is a Canadian video game developer based in Vancouver, founded in 1997 by Alex Garden and Luke Moloney. The studio is best known for the Homeworld, Company of Heroes, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War series. Its logo, a stylized lowercase “r” set within a rectangular badge, has become closely associated with the studio’s identity in the real-time strategy genre.
Design and History
The Relic Entertainment logo is built around the Latin letter “r” rendered in the company’s distinctive custom lettering style. The mark is presented within a rectangular badge format, typically shown in black and yellow. The design has remained consistent across the studio’s major releases, appearing in game intros, marketing materials, and on the company’s official website.[1]
The logo’s most distinctive feature is its incorporation of a naval mine into the letterform. According to a Company of Heroes developer diary, the “r” in the logo is shaped to evoke a sea mine, a detail that was later confirmed in-game as a German mine design.[2] This naval weapon motif is a subtle nod to the studio’s name, “Relic,” suggesting a recovered artifact from the sea.
In March 2020, SEGA Corporation filed a WIPO trademark application for the “r relic entertainment” logo, registering it as a color mark.[3] The trademark was registered in September 2020 with a validity period through 2030.[4]
Relic Entertainment was acquired by THQ in 2004, then transferred to SEGA in January 2013 following THQ’s bankruptcy.[5] In March 2024, SEGA sold the studio to a holding company established by UK investment firm Emona Capital LLP, making Relic an independently-run development studio again.[6] The studio stated it was “returning to its roots as an independent creative studio” with Emona Capital as the majority owner.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The naval mine embedded in the “r” letterform is the logo’s primary symbolic element. The mine, a strategic naval weapon, connects to the studio’s focus on military-themed strategy games, particularly the World War II setting of Company of Heroes and the futuristic warfare of Dawn of War. The developer diary that revealed this detail noted the mine was later identified as a German mine within the Company of Heroes universe.[2]
Typography and Design
The logo uses a custom letterform for the lowercase “r” that is unique to Relic Entertainment. The letter is designed with angular, mechanical strokes that integrate the mine silhouette into its negative space. The rectangular badge framing the letter provides a stable, compact container for the mark, allowing it to function effectively across game packaging, digital platforms, and studio communications. The color scheme of black and yellow provides strong contrast, with the yellow typically used as an accent against the black background.
