National Amusements, Inc. is a privately held movie theater operator and mass media holding company incorporated in Maryland and based in Norwood, Massachusetts. It is best known as the former controlling shareholder of Paramount Global, and it operates theater chains including Showcase Cinemas.[1]
Design and History
The National Amusements logo is a text-only wordmark that spells out the company name in a bold, sans-serif typeface. The mark is rendered in a distinctive pink-red color, a treatment that has remained consistent across the company’s corporate materials and theater properties.[2] A photograph taken outside the company’s Norwood headquarters in August 2016 shows the wordmark displayed on the building’s exterior.[3]
The company was founded in 1936 as the Northeast Theatre Corporation by Michael Redstone, who had previously opened one of the first drive-in theaters in the United States. The business was incorporated in 1946 as Redstone Management, and Sumner Redstone joined his father’s company in 1954 after practicing law.[4] The company later adopted the National Amusements name as it expanded from a regional drive-in chain into a larger theater circuit.[4]
In 1987, National Amusements acquired a controlling stake in Viacom, and in 1994 Viacom acquired Paramount Communications. National Amusements subsequently became the parent company of both Viacom and CBS Corporation, which merged in 2019 to form ViacomCBS, renamed Paramount Global in 2022.[1] In 2025, Paramount Global merged with Skydance Media to form Paramount Skydance Corporation, with Skydance paying $2.4 billion for National Amusements as part of the transaction.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
No official documentation has been published by National Amusements explaining the intended symbolism of its logo’s color or typography. The pink-red hue is the mark’s most distinctive feature, but the company has not publicly disclosed a specific meaning behind the color choice. The wordmark’s text-only format emphasizes the company name itself, consistent with its role as a private holding company rather than a consumer-facing entertainment brand.
Typography and Design
The National Amusements wordmark uses bold, sans-serif letterforms. The company has not publicly identified the specific typeface used in the logo, and no designer or agency has been credited for the mark’s creation. The logo is available in vector format through Wikimedia Commons, where it is catalogued alongside other National Amusements logo files.[2]
