The Sydney Opera House is a performing arts centre with several venues, located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.[1] It stands on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour and is considered a masterpiece of twentieth-century architecture.[1]

The building was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and finished by an Australian team led by Peter Hall.[1] Queen Elizabeth II formally opened it on 20 October 1973, sixteen years after Utzon won an international design competition in 1957.[1] The site occupies the whole of Bennelong Point, between Sydney Cove and Farm Cove, close to the central business district, the Royal Botanic Garden and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.[1] Its venues together host over 1,800 performances a year, attended by more than 1.4 million people.[1] The organisation runs an in-house design and communications team called Creative Studio.[2]

The story of Sydney Opera House

Interbrand Australia began working with the Sydney Opera House in 2014, after the institution found that crowds visited the building but few went inside.[3] The agency was asked to change how the Opera House was perceived.[3] The rebrand, built on the brand idea "Shifting Perspectives," began rolling out in December 2015.[4]

Since that 2015 rebrand by Interbrand Sydney, the Opera House has managed and evolved the brand identity internally from 2017 onwards.[2]

Only one colour appears in the Sydney Opera House logo: black (#000000). (Measured from the SVG file.)

The logo is an abstract, geometric representation of the building's profile, a compact and simple graphic that mimics its sails.[3][4] Its letters are bevelled, so each glyph is made up of multiple slopes and angles that, when animated with a light source, create shadow patterns evoking the Opera House at sundown.[4] Because the letters were built as real-world objects rather than only vectors, the typeface can be used as physical, 3D-printed signage lit by actual light sources.[4] A custom InDesign script was created so that anyone using the brand could turn typed copy into the 3D Utzon lettering with a single click.[4]

The core logo and typography use monochrome colours inspired by the building's exterior, running from off-white and pale cream through to dark muted greys.[3] The identity's sail shapes carry the subtle chevron pattern of the building's exterior but, unlike Utzon's monochrome shells, are filled with colours taken from the interior tapestries.[4]
