The Teatro de Arena da Guanabara was a short-lived Rio de Janeiro theatre company active in the late 1960s, part of the arena-stage movement that had reshaped Brazilian theatre since the 1950s.

The Teatro de Arena da Guanabara was a short-lived Rio de Janeiro theatre company active in the late 1960s, formed as part of the arena-stage movement that had reshaped Brazilian theatre since the 1950s. It is distinct from the better-known Teatro de Arena de São Paulo, the company founded in 1953 that launched the careers of Augusto Boal, Gianfrancesco Guarnieri and others and produced landmark works such as Eles não usam black-tie.

What can be stated about the Guanabara company is limited: the attribution of a 1967 logo to the cartoonist and illustrator Ziraldo is repeated in some summaries but is not confirmed by Ziraldo’s own published work, by any theatre archive or by the records of the arena movement, and no verifiable image of the mark has been located.

Ziraldo (1932–2024) was above all a caricaturist, children’s author and co-founder of the satirical weekly O Pasquim, and his graphic work of the late 1960s was dominated by editorial illustration rather than institutional identity design [1]. Assigning him a theatre logo from 1967 should be treated with caution until documentation—a programme, poster or press notice—can be produced.
