Družstvo Javorina was a Czechoslovak furniture manufacturing cooperative, founded in 1947 as the first production cooperative in eastern Slovakia, building on the region’s woodworking and carving traditions.[1] The cooperative later became known simply as Javorina, a brand that grew into a major Slovak manufacturer of solid wood furniture.[1]
Design and History
The Slovak National Gallery holds a design for a Javorina mark by Slovak graphic designer František Bobáň, dated 1972.[2] The work is catalogued as part of a series of corporate logotype proposals by Bobáň, who was active in corporate identity design in Bratislava during the 1960s and 1970s.[3] Bobáň also designed marks for other Czechoslovak organizations in the same period, including Biotika (1968) and a music school in Žilina (1971).[4][3]
In 2024, the Javorina brand underwent a visual identity redesign. The new logo, created by graphic designer Anna Issa Šotolová, dropped the previous circular emblem and focused on the brand name set in the typeface BC Figural Grand, a design from the 1940s by Czech type designer Oldřich Menhart.[5][6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The name Javorina derives from the Slovak word for maple (javor), reflecting the cooperative’s connection to wood and forestry. The 2024 redesign was described as freeing the logo from its previous circular stamp-like form, allowing the wordmark itself to carry the identity.[5] No documented symbolism has been published for Bobáň’s 1972 mark beyond its attribution to the cooperative.
Typography and Design
The 2024 wordmark uses BC Figural Grand, a typeface designed by Oldřich Menhart in the 1940s.[6] Menhart was also known for his woodcut work, a fitting reference for a furniture brand.[6] The earlier Bobáň mark from 1972 is documented only as a graphic design work in the Slovak National Gallery collection; no typographic or construction details have been published.[2]
