GEA Group AG is a German technology company headquartered in Düsseldorf that supplies systems and components to the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. The company traces its roots to the founding of the metals trading company Metallgesellschaft AG in 1881, and it adopted the GEA name in 2005 after merging with the Bochum-based engineering firm GEA AG. In March 2022, GEA rolled out a comprehensive brand refresh that introduced a new logo, color palette, icon set and custom typeface across its global digital and print touchpoints. [1]
Design and History
The 2022 refresh marked the first new corporate logo for the company since it began operating under the GEA Group name. The previous blue and gray house colors were developed into a broader spectrum, with ultramarine blue as the primary color and green, purple and red tones as secondary colors. [2]
The refreshed wordmark keeps the company name in capital letters but sets it in a new sans-serif geometric Roman typeface. Instead of the horizontal arc that previously connected the three letters at their center, a straight horizontal line now runs through the middle of the G, E and A, binding the letterforms into a single unit. Hard edges and pointed strokes give the wordmark a technical character. [2]
According to GEA, the logo was refreshed primarily to improve how it displays in digital contexts and to add dynamism. The company describes the design as featuring a horizontal platform that binds the logo together, with sharp, precise lines that embody technical excellence in engineering. [1]
The Hamburg-based design and brand consultancy MUTABOR acted as strategic partner for the brand refresh. [1] MUTABOR describes the brand mark as containing the entire DNA of the brand, with precision, modularity and openness as drivers intended to sustain the brand for the future. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
GEA states that the logo represents the premium quality of the GEA brand. The new color palette was designed to make a bold statement with strong contrasts, evoking the break of dawn and the opportunity for improvement each new day brings. [1]
MUTABOR elaborates on this color philosophy, explaining that the GEA colors refer to the moment of renewal: Vibrant Blue is energized by Energetic Pink, representing the solar energy that brings light to the day. The GEA world mainly appears in the colors Night Blue, Vibrant Blue and Energetic Pink. [3]
Typography and Design
The brand refresh introduced a custom typeface called GEA Sans. According to GEA, it features a bold, technical appeal that takes its cue from the logo’s latest iteration and is strongly associated with engineering. [1] MUTABOR describes the exclusively developed GEA Sans as standing out with its cool technical appearance, derived from the design principle of the further developed GEA logo. [3]
The refresh also introduced a new icon set with a simple, minimalistic design idiom. An open contour, which GEA calls the “nibble corner,” gives the icons a distinctive look. The icons use the same angles and curves as the logo to ensure a uniform appearance across the design system. [1] [3]
